International Zero Waste Day – A Call to Protect Our Ocean
As we mark International Zero Waste Day, our attention naturally turns to the ocean—the lifeline of the Maldives and the foundation of our way of life.
For generations, people living on remote islands across the Maldives have understood the importance of living in harmony with nature. Island life was built on simplicity and sustainability. Everything available in the surrounding environment was used wisely to support daily living. There was little waste, and almost nothing was discarded without purpose.
Historically, the Maldives did not produce plastic. Life was free from plastic pollution, and waste was minimal. Food waste, in particular, was nearly non-existent. Every part of the fish was used—whether for cooking traditional meals or creating valuable by-products. This deep respect for resources ensured a natural balance between people and their environment.
However, with the growth of tourism, new challenges have emerged. Imported goods brought convenience, but also introduced plastic bottles, packaging, and increased food waste. Today, large amounts of waste are generated, and in many cases, there are still limited facilities to properly manage and process this waste, especially on islands and resorts.
This shift has created an urgent need to rethink how we consume and dispose of materials.
On this International Zero Waste Day, we are reminded that our economy depends heavily on our environment. The beauty of our oceans, reefs, and islands is what attracts visitors from around the world. Protecting this natural wealth is not just an environmental responsibility—it is an economic necessity.
We must take action by:
• Reducing the use of single-use plastics
• Managing food waste more responsibly
• Investing in proper waste management systems
• Promoting awareness and sustainable practices across all islands and resorts
It is time to move forward with stronger planning, better management, and a shared commitment to minimizing waste.
Maldivians have lived in balance with nature for centuries. We must return to those roots—adapting them to modern life—to ensure future generations thrive in a clean, healthy environment.
At Whale Shark Boutique, Fenfushi Island, we have practiced a single-use plastic–free policy since day one. We also call on the island council to adopt this approach in daily life to protect whale sharks and their habitat.
Zero waste is not just a goal. It is a responsibility we all share.
