Nature Saturday: Majete Wildlife Reserve

Nestled in the south-western region of Malawi, Majete Wildlife Reserve is one of Africa’s most inspiring conservation success stories, a remarkable journey of restoration, protection, and wildlife resurgence.

Located in the scenic Lower Shire Valley, just south of Blantyre, Majete underwent a dramatic transformation after African Parks assumed management of the reserve in 2003. Since then, extensive wildlife reintroduction programmes have revitalised this 70,000-hectare protected area, increasing animal populations to more than 5,000.

Today, Majete is proudly recognised as an amazing Big Five reserve. Visitors have the opportunity to encounter an impressive range of wildlife, including Black Rhinos and Elephants (reintroduced in 2006), Lions (2012), Giraffes (2018 and 2021), Cheetahs (2019–2021), and African Wild Dogs (2021). The reserve is also home to Buffalo, Zebra, Hartebeest, and numerous antelope species such as Kudu and Roan Antelope.

Beyond its extraordinary wildlife, Majete offers breathtaking natural landscapes. One of its standout attractions is Kapichira Falls, where dramatic rock formations and sweeping views have been shaped over thousands of years by the power of the Shire River.

Malawi’s Scorchers make history

The Malawi Women’s National Football team ‘the Scorchers‘ have achieved something that, just weeks ago, seemed almost unimaginable.

Arriving as debutants and the lowest-ranked team in the tournament at 153rd, the Scorchers were thrown into the group of death and somehow survived. Then came a heated semi-final against Ghana, where a dramatic 78th-minute goal changed everything.

That moment sent Malawi into the WAFCON semi-final and, for the first time in their history, secured their place at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Sunday Art day: Phyzix

Noel Limbani Chikoleka, known professionally as Phyzix Phyzix™ phyzixmw, is a Malawian multi-award-winning and best-selling rapper, songwriter, record executive, activist, banker, marketer and businessman.

His other stage names are Gamba, Captain Bae & Phyzo.

Born on 18th December and raised in Area 12, Lilongwe but is popularly known to be from Area 25, Lilongwe where he moved to as a teenager in 2003 and made it popular in his music.

Phyzix rose to fame with the release of his successful single “Cholapitsa” (2006). In 2008, he established his own record label and media company; “Bantu Records”, which he later rebranded to “It’s Only Entertainment” (IOE).

After releasing 3 mixtapes, he released his debut studio album, “The Lone Ranger LP” (2009) which had the successful singles “Gamba”, “Usodzi”, “Jessie” and “Abwana”. Phyzix has released more than 14 albums.

He has won awards for Artist of the Year (Male), Album of the Year (Gamba Season) and Song of the Year (Makofi) at the 2020 Malawi Hip Hop Awards. He also won Best Hip Hop Act and Album of the Year (Gamba Season) at the 2020 UMP Awards.

He serves in his community as a Champion for Youth Development and the Environment.
