Last evening climbing down from the repair scaffolding, I came across 2 Bat sculptures. All these years, I had never noticed the sculptures despite them being within eyeshot on the facade pillars of Betel Nut Lodge. It took the skilled hands of the artisans to bring them to prominence when before it was just a mass of whitewashed plasters-I am ecststic! Now we have two bats, one on each pillar to bring us double tidings of Luck and Longevity!

The scaffolding's up! Today marks the first day of the estimated 3-weeks duration of the restoration of Betel Nut Lodge's facade. Age has obscured the beauty of this 160-year old grand dame of a heritage buiding. With the help of 3 Chinese artisans, we aim to highlight and restore the beauty of Qianci (嵌瓷) decorative features on our heritage Straits eccletic building built in 1860s.
