UPDATE: MEETING WITH THE PRINCIPAL, CKC GWAGWALADA
Dear Brothers,
As earlier communicated, a delegation of the CKC Abuja Old Boys Association met with Brother Mario, Principal of CKC Gwagwalada, on Sunday, 16th August, for what turned out to be a very open, frank and fruitful two-hour conversation about our Alma Mater.
We went primarily to listen, understand the present situation of the school and explore how the Old Boys can work more closely with the school.
One encouraging update is that student enrolment is improving. The school population, which had fallen below 500, has now risen to about 620 students, with the Principal working towards further growth.
Brother Mario also shared some of the work already being done to reposition the school. This includes approximately ₦20 million in renovations and repairs, as well as considerable investment in publicity and admission promotion with plans to spend an additional ₦30 million on upcoming works.
We had extensive discussions around admissions, publicity, infrastructure, student formation and discipline, eradication of bad habits, discounted fees for Old Boys children, security, alumni engagement and the future of CKC.
Perhaps the strongest message from the meeting was a simple one:
The Old Boys need to come back to CKC.
Not only for major projects or when there is a problem. Brother Mario encouraged us to become a regular and visible presence in the school, reawaken the past culture of eating with the students, spending a few days in CKC, playing football/basket ball matches with the students and teachers, attending and supporting school activities, interacting with the students, mentoring them and undertaking even small projects that improve their environment as well as possible contracts/jobs ex*****on for CKC Old Boys that are properly vetted and recommended.
A set can paint a classroom. Another can fix toilets or improve a facility. Old Boys can sponsor prizes, WAEC/JAMB support, graduation activities, electronic information boards and other initiatives. We can also bring accomplished Old Boys back to interact with and inspire the students.
Importantly, we discussed beginning the relationship with future Old Boys before they leave CKC, including engaging graduating students and creating a more deliberate pathway into the Old Boys Association.
We also discussed using the profile and reach of prominent Old Boys and other personalities connected to CKC to strengthen the school's visibility and inspire the boys.
The meeting gave us a much better understanding of what is happening within the school and, equally importantly, where we as Old Boys can do more.
We presented Brother Mario with a small token of appreciation at the beginning of the meeting, and he reiterated that the doors of CKC remain open to us.
There are several ideas and possible action points from the engagement which we will consolidate and bring before the Association for discussion.
A big thank you to the Brothers who made out time to attend.
This shouldn't be a one-off visit. We need to come home more often, we need our boys to see us as their role models more.
Our Alma Mater needs our presence as much as our resources.
Together, We B.O.N.D.S.
