ONCE I HEAR - EXAMS IS NEXT WEEK O! - I READ LIKE A MAD MAN. WHY?
We'll explain why you suddenly feel motivated to read when examination is very close.
We'll also explain why you always feel reluctant to read when examination is still far away.
More than that, we'll explain how you can get yourself to start reading and studying long before examination comes close - if that's what you've always wanted to do but couldn't.
In pidgin - dem no born you well, make exams be tomorrow and you never still read. Nobody go advise you; you go read by force!
But why e de like that?
The answer is MOTIVATION but we'll have to explain.
Do you remember seeing a truck coming from afar off while trying to cross the road? You didn't bother running across the road, did you?
Another time, you made to cross the road and saw a taxi just within few metres and you almost flew to the other side of the road screaming and shouting!
That second reaction was motivated by the fear of accident and death!
Like it or not, your brain has enough information on what it means to be crushed by a car.
With the car just few metres away from you...
The thought of being hit by the car...
The thought of accident...
The thought of pains and sustained injuries...
The thought of deformation that may last for years...
The thought of dying...
The pains it'll caused to loved ones... fills you with fear and you move with so much speed!
Same thing with imminent examination.
The thought of seeing questions you don't know. Those questions you would have known if you studied.
The thought of failing woefully.
The thought of resitting or wasting another year. The disappointment and the down feeling...
You move by fear to read and you read with so much speed and alacrity as if someone's is right behind you to ensure you are reading!
This type of motivation is known as EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION. It's motivation from external factors. Motivation from outside.
Most students are motivated by external negative factors. Most teachers too try to motivate students to study or do their school works with external negative factors - punishment; caning, pick pin, sit on the wall etc.
Motivation by external negative factors may yield result but students hate it with passion. Students only cooperate when the danger is imminent. They cooperate to avoid the imminent danger.
We've said this before: there is a way the brain works and you can't force it to work otherwise!
Getting enough motivation to read/study voluminous books few days to your Exams doesn't mean you'll understand everything you read, retain them and recall them. It only means you are reading and you aren't caring about distractions because you know the danger ahead!
Learners/students who perform above expectations subscribe to a type of motivation called INTRINSIC MOTIVATION.
It's a motivation from inside.
They are motivated by their goals.
They are motivated by curiousity.
They are motivated by a sense of discipline.
They are motivated by a plan well drawn on paper.
They are motivated by their sense of past victories.
They are the Christiano Ronaldo type of achievers.
Once examination is one week ahead and you begin to look for your book and read them with speed, you do not belong to this class of motivation.
But we would like to have you belong here.
