Sometimes, Agriculture Feels Like Magic

Honestly, there’s something truly magical about watching life emerge from the soil. This video was taken just a few days after planting maize in a section of the Okooba, Ago-Iwoye, Ijebu, Agricultural Park by Ijebu Market in August and you could already see tiny green shoots breaking through the earth. That sight never gets old.

Each time I walk through the agricultural park, I’m reminded that agriculture is more than just a science or a business — it’s a quiet conversation between human effort and nature’s rhythm. You plant, you nurture, you hope and then one day, you return to find a field transformed.

The section you see in that video was just the beginning. Since then, the crops have gone far beyond what the footage showed — as I recently shared in another video two days ago which was recorded over two weeks ago. It’s humbling to see what consistency, good soil, and the right conditions can create in such a short time.

As the year draws to a close, we’re already looking towards harvest — both the literal one in our fields and the broader one in the opportunities we’re cultivating together.

Sometimes, agriculture feels like magic. But really, it’s the magic of work, patience, and faith meeting fertile ground.

As we plan towards the first harvest of tomatoes from our current backward-integration tomatoes cultivation farmland, our customer (the tomato processing company) notified us that they have to commission their processing equipment, which means we had to get them tomatoes from elsewhere leveraging the Ijebu Market Ipamo network.

Secondly, this is also because we at Ijebu Market were not able to secure enough investment in 2024 to cultivate the required land to cover the entire (as we only cultivated a fraction) need of the tomato processing company; so we resumed sourcing tomatoes directly from other tomato farmers to ensure the total need is met.

We’re excited to share that we have successfully started moving tomatoes to the manufacturing company, keeping their machines running while they await our harvest. This marks another important step in our agri-supply chain efficiency for the manufacturers we work with and ensuring seamless production.

Check out the pictures and videos below to see the process in action of the different supplies. This journey has been both challenging and rewarding, and we’re excited about what’s ahead.

ON ATARODO (HABANEROS) PROJECT

Ijebu Market got updates earlier this morning on the Habaneros (Atarodo) making great progress in the farmland in Kogi. Harvest for this should commence in November.

We also updated the Food processor and Grocery delivery startup in line to buy harvests this morning on the status of the ongoing cultivation. They are both delighted and expectant.

Organic measures were taken in this particular cultivation.

On Friday October 11th, our Founder/CEO, Segun Ogunlana was one of the panelists on the panel session at the just concluded Non-Oil Export Summit organized by ProvidusBank at Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria-Island, Lagos.

The opportunities and challenges in sourcing, aggregating and cultivating different food & agricultural commodities for exporters & international buyers were the key areas that our Founder/CEO provided extensive information on.

PROJECT UPDATE
A small manufacturer who manufactures Gaari that is fortified with Coconut & Milk reached out to Ijebu Market recently that they have been struggling to get Cassava for production especially at a favourable price.

I responded that I observed the challenge in 2023 after visiting some local Gaari producers with the same difficulties.

The manufacturer asked if Ijebu Market could cultivate Cassava for their production. We asked for their monthly feedstock demand which was shared with us. This is for us to estimate the land size needed. We told them yes but not certain how fast that will start getting to them.

This is also because the cassava variety to be cultivated for 10 months which means they might not operate or just do on & off until we can assure them of stable supply.

Second issue was the part that Coconut was not really available for commercial production in the country and they have to import from Benin Republic and other West-African countries. I was stunned when I heard this but some other people have confirmed same.

Anyways, things are already being put in place with a farmland owner and Ijebu Market for Cassava cultivation to begin on the farmland in the attached picture. We will be sharing progress here in coming weeks.

And if there are people interested in Perennial crops like Coconut trees, please let us talk.

Earlier today, IjebuMarket signed a farming and aggregation contract with a manufacturing company in Lagos. For the manufacturer, it will provide them guaranteed agricultural inputs at affordable/guaranteed offtake price (so consumers in the Nigerian economy can have access to affordable food).

Secondly, it will provide jobs/earning opportunities & world-class support to farmers (over 100 women & youths who reside in rural areas) to cultivate in Ogun state and Oyo state within proximity to the manufacturer's processing plant.
