He healed the man who came to take Him to the cross. And the soldiers did not even react.
Every time I read this part of the Bible, I feel uncomfortable. It is one of the most shocking moments in all of Scripture.
You know the scene. It is night in Gethsemane. The air is heavy. Fear is rising. Judas has just betrayed Jesus with a kiss. Soldiers and temple guards are there with weapons.
Then Peter loses control.
He pulls out his sword and swings it. A servant’s ear falls to the ground. There is blood. There is shouting. Everything is out of control.
And then Jesus steps in.
“But Jesus answered, ‘No more of this!’ And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.” - Luke 22:51 NIV
Can you imagine that moment? In the middle of anger and violence, Jesus chooses to heal.
This was His last miracle before the cross.
But who did He heal? Not a disciple. Not a friend. Not someone who believed in Him.
He healed the servant of the high priest. The man who came with a group to arrest Him. The man who stood there to help send Him to death.
Why would He do that?
The Gospel of John tells us something else that happened that night. When the soldiers came looking for Jesus and He said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground (John 18:6 NIV). Just His voice was enough to knock them down.
Think about that. They had already seen power. They had already felt something beyond normal.
And now they are standing close enough to see a severed ear restored. Flesh repaired. Blood stopped. Pain gone.
They are looking at the power of the Creator.
And still, nothing changes.
No one drops a sword. No one falls to their knees. No one says, Who is this man?
They simply continue with their plan.
They tie His hands. They lead Him away.
That silence is frightening.
How often have we said, God, if You just show me a clear sign, then I will believe? If You just answer one prayer in a big way, I will fully follow You.
But those soldiers had a clear sign. They saw a miracle with their own eyes. And it did not move their hearts.
Why?
Because miracles do not force surrender. They only reveal what is already inside.
Jesus once said, “If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.” - Luke 16:31 NIV
The problem is never lack of evidence. The problem is the condition of the heart.
Those soldiers were focused on their task. Arrest the man. Follow orders. Do the job. They were so busy doing what they were told that they missed who was standing in front of them.
Is it possible to be that close to Jesus and still miss Him?
Is it possible to hear sermons, read Bible verses, see answers to prayer, and yet keep walking the same path?
Yes, it is.
You can stand inches away from a miracle and still choose not to change.
The cross shows us something powerful. Even while being betrayed, arrested, and abandoned, Jesus still healed. He still showed mercy.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” - Romans 5:8 NIV
He was already loving them. He was already loving us.
He did not heal that servant to impress the crowd. He healed him because that is who He is.
So maybe the real question is not, God, will You show me a sign?
Maybe the real question is, If He does, will I surrender?
Are you waiting for a dramatic miracle before you follow Him more deeply? Or have you already seen enough?
The soldiers had their sign. They saw power and walked away unchanged.
Let us not do the same.
Do not wait for heaven to shake before you bow your heart. Do not wait for something spectacular before you choose obedience.
Jesus is not trying to entertain your eyes. He is calling your heart.
And today, the question is simple.
Are you ready to surrender?
