This is a typical day at Ikorodu Ferry Terminal; yet the Lagos State Government says it does not have interest in waterways business...

A trip from Ikorodu to Victoria Island costs between 700 and 900 naira. An average patron pays or spends between 1,400 and 1,800 naira thru and fro daily.

Patrons spend a maximum duration of between 25 and 30minutes on a trip compare to the over three, four hours spend on the road, yet the state government insists it's not the way forward for a supposed smart city.

Water transport, all over the globe, is believed to be the safest form of transportation.

It's therefore, unimaginable that a state like Lagos, that claims to be a mega city, situated in, and surrounded by, water would not have a viable and lucrative means of water transportation; especially, in a traffic, if not 'standstill' or 'go slow' drenched metropolis.

Just recently, over a dozen people had died in a boat mishap. Many had blamed the local boat operator, and the over 20 patrons themselves, for not wearing live jackets. But truth be told, the government's failure to provide basic social security and/or amenities, over years, is responsible for the avoidable deaths.

*Fayose's Flyover Unnecessary and a Waste of Resources - NIMG*

The Nigeria Infrastructure Monitoring Group, NIMG, after its one day monitoring mission to Ekiti State to give on the spot assessment of the current level of work on the on-going overhead bridge in Ado Ekiti yesterday, has described the project as unnecessary and a waste of the state scarce resources.

The head of the three-man team, Engr. Hamsat Adams, FNSE, in a brief interaction with the DailyTelegraph said his team was in Ado Ekiti on an independent monitoring and observation mission on the Fajuyi flyover bridge.

Engr. Adams said his coming to Ekiti was to enable his agency assess the progress of work on the flyover bridge based on the loan agreement the state government had with the Federal government on the project and other ones.

"I can tell you that we are satisfied with the progress of work. But come to think of it, there was no need for this flyover bridge in the first instance. "How do you describe this project, an overhead bridge on a dryland or a flyover? If you call it a bridge, I will say this is unnecessary, if you call it a flyover, I will ask, where are the congestion here. Look, flyovers are built on a very difficult intersection to prevent congestion and provide a more convenient way to navigate over the traffic. In this case, I asked, where is the traffic here?"

"On the design of the bridge, I will say it is even more complicated. In my own opinion, the length of the bridge is unnecessary, it is rather too long and narrow. Going by the design, it will even constitute more traffic challenges to road users more than when there was no bridge here. Whatever the state government must have put into consideration before embarking on this flyover project, I say it is unnecessary and a waste of scarce resources. This is just a project in its fancy. In my own little knowledge of engineering, this is an infrastructure misplaced."

Talking about the cost of the project, Engr. Adams said: "Like I have said earlier, the project in itself is a waste of resources. Governance is about placing infrastructure for the best and maximum benefit of the people. I don't see the urgent need for this project at this point in Ado Ekiti. If a Governor will tell his people that he has committed about ₦14 billions on a project like this, then it is also good for such people to ask some questions from the governor. This is not about politics, but talking as a professional, I will tell anyone there is no need for this project."

On the Oja Oba modern market, Engr. Adams simple said: "We would request from the Governor why the project was stopped. They need to provide information on the Oja Oba modern market. It will help our records."

After several years, Lagos State Government finally decided to introduce ferry services called WAXI LAGOS on Ikoyi-Victoria Island-Lekki and Ikorodu axis.

Sadly, the masses of residents in Lagos still cannot access the ferry services, because it is too expensive.

While the Private Operators charge just 700 Naira, WAXI LAGOS charge 900 Naira.

One would expect that the state government FERRY SERVICE would be less expensive and masses driven, but surprisingly it is ridiculously too high.

It is even most ridiculous that only two ferries (WAXI LAGOS) were released to this axis.

Below are some tickets obtained from WAXI LAGOS. Although its officials deliberately refused to inscribe the transport fare/cost on the tickets, it is still evident enough...

The first pix here is the Lagos State Government jetty that was built by the State Government and has been locked up for over 8years. It has never been operated since it was built.

But the second, third and fourth pixes are of patrons and operators of ferry services on wooden jetty close to this closed up jetty in Ikorodu.

I was reliably informed that about three of this huge edifice, which were built around Lagos - Ikorodu, Apapa and inside Iyana Oworo - have actually been unused ever since they were built.

Aside the truth that the State Government, by this action, has been putting the lives of Lagosians and residents in Lagos at risk on the water by allowing them to make use of these wooden jetties, imagine the amount of money it could realise by putting this edifice to use.

I wonder what they are thinking, sincerely.

We can all become monitors of public projects in our areas. There are a thousand and one abandoned projects by governments and public office holders around us, and we must start following up and monitoring their progress, to force our so-called governments and public officer holders to be accountable to us.

YOU CAN SNAP abandoned projects around you and send to [email protected] for publication on ppmg platform.

Snap every pothole, drainage, road, hospital, school and other infrastructure projects in your domain for ppmg. Always remember to send pictures with captions, stating where, who, when and the date it was taken.

PPMG verification is inevitable.

A little effort can make the difference, I believe.
