Turning your hotel into a business that brings you
money is very simple. Just build a house put a
name on it and at the back of the name just put
hotel for example,"Lion Hotel" and people will start
coming at least to with their neighbors wife and
also they will come to drink since you provide a
free watching center for EPL but they will buy a
lesser food on less you sell at a low quality and
your price is the same or close to the nearest
canteens.But still you're making money.
I love hospitality business and I want to assure
you, if your hotel is running this way, improve on your
management.
Hotel is not meant for people around you to
commit immorality but if they come its not our
duty to pursue them also since we are into the
business to make money
But this should not be our priorities. Hotel is met
for strangers who needs a temporary place of
aboard and desire conveniency. People who need
a place to sleep, something to eat and drink for a
mere time.
If you have been running your hotel basically for
your immediate environment and you have been
thinking you are making money, possibly all what
you have made may be later returned on
maintenance of the property.
Running a hotel, you must have this always at
the back of your mind every time, the number of
the Vacant Clean rooms and see it as lost every
night because building either used or not used, it
depreciates and some people even believe that an
abandoned room depreciate faster to a used a
used one.
This article is meant to open the face of
hotel Owners and managers to possibility of
maximizing their profit and minimizing their cost
and also to inspire upcoming hotel marketers.
I once got a job in a hotel as a marketer and general supervisor, that
was my first job as a marketer, though I study
marketing in school but I did not have the ideal
of what it takes to be an hotel marketer and all
what I was thinking was that, I will just have to go out
there and bring guests into the hotel like a magic but my
brother it's not an easy task. My first six month I
won't lie to you, i couldn't bring a guest to sleep in the hotel if not one of my friend that will just
come to cheat on his wife once is a blue moon and I think
if my job in that hotels is just to bring a guest into
the hotel, I don't think that will justify my pay but
later I give up and I try to forget everything have
learn at school and started learning what is
called hotel management and thank God now I
can brag that I can make an history with any
hotel I decided to work with.
Been a hotel marketers is not an easy task you
must understand the basic principle of marketing
and it's application and you have to be able to
add it to basic principle governing hotel management before can you Succeed in marketing a hotel
Let us start from the application of
the basic four P's of marketing to an hotel
management.
Infact if you understand hospitality industry very
you will know that you to have put place first
before any other mix. You consider Place first as
a marketing mix.
PLACE: You have to considered your environment
first who are the guest we are expecting here,
business men or people who will just becoming
for events at weekends, how many event center
do we have around us or what will people be
looking for coming around this place, do we have
companies around, how is the hotels around us
doing, though is a little problem for marketer who
aspire beyond average. Million of familiar
question like these should be put to paper let me
give you a practical example though I won't tell
you why but find out that for yourself. Lagos
Ireland hotels will be busy during the weekdays
but most of them will be forced to drop there
price during the weekends if they want someone
to use their property and at the mainland the
weekdays are dry but the weekend are
encouraging especially on Sundays night. what do you think is the problem? place concept, figure it out.
It's only when you get through with your place
concept before you can think of the product, if
anybody wants to dispute this tell them they are
not hotelier. Now let us talk about the product
(Goods and Service)
PRODUCT
Like I was asked in an interview what do we sell
in a hotel? In a hotel we sell rooms(accommodation
ion), food and beverages and some others
attached some services to make their business
stand out like pool, gym, event hall and many
more but majorly we sell room, food and
beverages but how thus these concern a
marketer? You are not a house keeper and you
don't need to cook or serve as a waiter but
remember, a bad product will only sell but once,
then how are you going to ensure a continuous
patronage.
I was in my room one night around 12 AM, my
phone just rang and I picked up the phone, it was
an unusual guest, a friend brought him to pass the night
in one of our property "The AC is not working,
this is not good, I can't take this in fact I have I to
checkout now" the man lamented furiously. I tried
to contact my maintenance department to ask what is going on and they told me the generator is faulty and they have to depend on Inverter which
can not power the AC and pump water to the last
floor. That night I knew it,we have lost a customer, before
resuming at the office, I heard the guest
checked out instead of staying for two weeks and
he never returned again, I even try to call his number but
till now he won't pick my calls.
It's the duty of the marketer to ensure that what
you're selling is seasoned and good. Make sure
everything is in good condition before anybody
will come asking for it, go into the rooms check
the AC, the water, the toilet, TV, look for dust and
cobwebs. Check if the bed is properly laid and if anything is not in position don't be scared to
query anybody that fails to cooperate with you, if
possible query the manager, if he is not doing his
job, tell him he is the reason you are not selling.
Hospitality services start from the gate, make
sure that guest are well received and attended to.
Work on Your GSA attitude and grooming. In fact here
you have a lot to do, they call it internal marketing In a hospitality industry, we need our
marketers internally more than any other industry.
Take it or leave, pull strategy will work better for
a hotel but it's your duty on how to keep the
guest that work in and don't forget a well certified
guest will bring another. Good product sell itself.
If you're a marketer you will understand that.
It's like am going too deep on product. not to
take your time let's go for the price
PRICE:
When it comes to hotel marketing I wonder what type of gods see to hospitality affairs because
here we brake all the law governing and
embraced few rules. Let me start this way, only a
lazy manager will go to his board and seek a
reduce in price to boost sales. If you like believe this
but here in Lagos the most expensive hotel sells the highest number of rooms, which is against
the law of demand and also the hotel with the
highest number of rooms are the most expensive
and they are still having the highest sales which is against the law of supply. Just take this
without negotiations 'Hospitality Industry is
complicated'.
Price decision needs consultancy of professionals when it come to this industry. Your price must be relatively sensible. You don't need to be the
cheapest hotel in your vicinity, in fact it's better you are the most expensive. Just let me teach you this, am not suppose to but I wish I will pardon myself for this. The hotel industry is competitive and the guest are not after the rate
since its reasonable,what they are after is the
service. If your price is too low they will see it as an inferior and some won't even border to see the service no matter how strong your marketing is but if your price is reasonable, they see it as a superior place, befitting some class and they will like to have a taste but meanwhile try to have a standard and meet up with basic guest expectation.
I think I should go straight to promotion now because that's the most important part.
PROMOTION:
Promoting a hotel is the most sensitive aspect of a hotel management but with a seasoned professional marketer, it is not a big issue just sit down everyday and think and be sure money is been put to the Wright
place. Promotion must be skillful.
Promotion on its own has its own tool which are
publicity, personal marketing, advertisement.
Sales promotion and with the latest and most effective tool "internet marketing".
All these are the promotional tool But been able
to apply it and use it in solving problems is what
we call professionalism. I think I have to stop here.
