Not my favorite Biennale, if I’m honest, but basing myself in Dorsoduro made me fall for Venice all over again. There’s a particular joy in a neighborhood quiet enough to actually walk, unhurried, past bacari that haven’t yet made anyone’s list, and gelato that doesn’t require an act of crowd management to reach.

Being a few calli from Peggy Guggenheim and the Accademia didn’t hurt either. Nor did stumbling into some of the city’s best small galleries, or a handful of Biennale pavilions tucked away enough to feel like a secret you’re allowed to keep. Sometimes the art fair is the excuse. The city is the reason.

I still hate to love Venezia. 😍

One of the reasons I built this trip around a single date: a total solar eclipse over Iceland, the first since 1954.

Days of nonstop sun, then, right when it mattered, the sky changed its mind. My clients and I watched from wherever it gave us a window: some from the lagoons, some from Reykjavík Bay. Everyone walked away happy. That’s the deal you make with this island.

I’d chosen mine months earlier: Echolalia, Björk’s eclipse festival marking 40 years of Smekkleysa, the record shop that raised half of Iceland’s music scene. Arca opened, pulling the crowd into darkness right before the sky did the same. Then two minutes of silence under a vanished sun and, finally, Björk walked back into the light.

Thousands of years ago, people gathered to watch the sky and made myths out of it. We just swapped the fire for a festival. Same shiver.

Collective effervescence. I’ve felt it a few times traveling. This was one of the good ones.

Cheers!

The first Sapiens looked at the sky and made myths.
We look at the same sky and make journeys.
Aurora season is open. The time to book is now!

“Aurora, got the sparkle”

The last long trek of this trip, and fittingly, one through terrain that demands respect. The moss here grows only millimeters a year; one careless footprint can take decades, sometimes a century, to heal. A fitting note to end on: exploring Iceland with a responsible DMC isn’t a luxury, it’s a must!

Where I come from, waterfalls are not scenery, they are altars, and the roar is a prayer we answer with silence, not applause. You don’t capture an altar; you lower your voice and let the mist bless your face, because some things were falling long before you arrived.

Like a Sigur Ros song, Iceland’s basalt speaks the same reverence in a different dialect. Fire cooled into stone, worn soft by water, but the grammar is familiar: stand small, stay quiet, and let the sacred stay sacred. 🧡🇮🇸

There’s a version of this trip where I admire Iceland’s waterfalls from a respectful, dry distance. That’s the winter version. This was summer. No ice fields to keep you back, no reason not to get yourself wet. So I got wet. 😎

Where I came from, waterfalls are sacred, meant to heal. Iceland’s don’t ask what you’re carrying, they just take it.
