The Lighthouse Choir The Lighthouse Choir is an art research project by Anna Krtičková, Natalia Orendain and Ann Mirjam Vaikla.

Our focus in the field of performative architecture lies in our interest in the in-between spaces of a social construction. Instead of improving general understanding of the physical materiality of architecture, we have chosen the broader aspect of network space. We observe the functioning of great man-made systems that arrange space in a comprehensible, universal way. Focusing on the small parts

that confirm the established structure allows us to comprehend its function in the overall picture. In December 2013, at Homlungen lighthouse in Norway, we decided to translate the location of a single lighthouse, far out in the ocean, into sound as it responded to the lonesome atmosphere of the lighthouse architecture that we were experiencing ourselves. In order to do this, we created improvised vocal sounds, with our bodies reacting to the visual appearance of the surrounding lighthouses, forming a system of nautical signals.

This is the second workshop taking place in Norway where our project originally found its' beginning:

Beyond the Arctic Circle

The second workshop arranged by the Norwegian Theatre Academy/Østfold University College within the Prague Quadrennial´s SharedSpace project will take place in Vardø.
Vardø is a small town far beyond the Arctic Circle on a little island in the most Northeastern part of Norway. The town´s inhabitants do not see sunlight for two months of the year. Our workshop will take place just as the sun slowly begins to rise above the horizon once again.

Dating back to its founding in 1306, Vardø is Norway´s most Eastern town, its history is marked by its strategic importance close to Russia. The town was bombed during the Second World War and rebuilt during the early 1950s. The workshop follows the main themes of SharedSpace project, which are Music, Weather and Politics.

The Music will be a blend between natural and human voices and sounds, as well as the evoked music within our imagination. The Weather, understood as an extreme condition, will be the foundation of the workshop, which will focus on the sensory experience of such a distinct site. In terms of Politics, this small town at the border of Russia will be explored for its placement which gives it a distinct cultural and strategic identity..

Machiavelli, Comedian Most familiar today as the godfather of Realpolitik and as the eponym for all things cunning and devious, the Renaissance thinker Niccolò Machiavelli also had a lighter side, writing as he did a number of comedies. Christopher S. Celenza looks at perhaps the best known of these…

Earlier this week, Oxford's Bodleian Library announced that it had digitized a 550 year old copy of the Gutenberg Bible along with a number of other ancient bibles, some of them quite beautiful. Not to be outdone, the British Library came out with its own announcement on Thursday:
