📖HISTORY OF THE ICONIC SEFTON CASTLE Now

🌅The Castle was the vision of its owners Merv and Sarndra Higgs after Sarndra returned from an extensive trip around Europe.

🇪🇸She was inspired by the architecture in Spain and Italy and wanted to emulate that in a family home in Sefton.

🏛️They engaged award-winning Architect Philip Kennedy to design the Castle, originally known as Accolade Lodge.

🔨Construction first began in 1998 and was undertaken by Merv Higgs who had extensive experience in concrete building construction while heading his firm Higgs Construction, which is still in operation today.

🫨Merv worked on the Castle until the Canterbury earthquakes in 2010 and then construction was paused. There was no earthquake damage to the building but changes in the Higgs’ personal circumstances saw the build slowed significantly at that point.

🏚️The building sat in an uncompleted state until 2021 when it was purchased by Phil Metaxas, the current owner and your host.

🦅At that point the building had been inhabited by hundreds of pigeons and was at the framing stage. Pictures on display at the castle show the state of the property at that point.

👷🏽‍♂️A massive effort was undertaken to complete the Castle which involved completing almost every aspect of the build. This process took around a year and involved many different skilled tradesmen.

😅Throughout the building process there were many challenges
and these included the Covid 19 epidemic which caused numerous delays and material price increases, plasterboard shortages, labour shortages, bad weather and the inevitable budget blowout!

🚪The building comprises of 1200m2 of floor area and is constructed of reinforced concrete filled concrete block. The internal floors are also pre-cast and poured concrete.

🖌️The external finish is painted solid plaster. Many of the internal block walls have been solid plastered and left in their raw and natural state.

🐴The building sits on 10 acres (4 Hectares) of gently sloping land that rises 90 metres above sea level and provides great views out to the Pacific Ocean and Mount Grey to the West.

👑Inside the Castle there are:

🛌 7 bedrooms
🛁 7 bathrooms
🚽 9 toilets
🛋️ 3 living areas
🍷 a wine cellar
📝 an office retreat
🍽️ a formal dining room
🎼a formal lounge
🌞an atrium
👨‍🍳 3 kitchens
🌀2 spiral staircases (one in progress)
🔥11 heat pumps and a log fire
🛗 a 3-level lift
🍕 an outdoor pizza oven
🏕️ outdoor gas fire
🗽3 towers and a roof top viewing area (main tower) all built over 4 stories and multiple levels.

🏘️Incorporated into the building design is a 2 bedroom-2 bathroom
apartment that is separated from there main building by the courtyard. This is where the current owner now lives.

🗿Each of the concrete stairs in the main spiral staircase was pre-cast by Merv offsite and transported by Merv on his tractor and laid individually in conjunction with the block laying. This is a true engineering masterpiece and we have purposely left the concrete in its raw and natural state.

🚧Many concrete areas have been left in their “as poured” state also. At every turn there are interesting curves, angles and features and although the building is only around 25 years old it looks like it could have been built at the turn of the century.
