Little pieces of Te Aka, through the eyes of the people who have stayed here. 🌿

A sentence left in the guest book. A bird they stopped to watch. A moment in the forest they carried home with them.

We are the kaitiaki of this place, and caring for this whenua is a privilege. Seeing the relationships our guests form with it, then reading their words afterward, gets us every time.

We build the dream.

Then, sometimes, the dream begins to consume the life it was meant to create.

Perhaps resistance looks like this:

Letting the bread rise in its own time.
Letting the horse set the pace.
Putting paint to paper with nowhere useful to go.
Allowing shape to take form from the clay in your hands.
Allowing the rain to rewrite the day.
Planting the seeds and letting them grow.

Not everything needs to become content, income or proof that we used our time well.

Some things are allowed to remain imperfect.

Some things are allowed to belong only to us.

Look, we know how this goes.

November arrives, Christmas somehow becomes next week, summer holidays need organising, everyone wants to catch up before the end of the year and every free weekend you thought you had suddenly belongs to someone else.

Our summer calendar is already getting pretty snug too, so we’re stepping in here before things get out of hand.

Take the holiday now.

We’ve still got a few weekends and weekdays free through October, including school holiday dates and Labour Weekend, which makes it a pretty excellent little window to chuck a bag in the car and come disappear into the West Coast for a couple of nights.

And because we’re looking out for you, we’ll throw in a complimentary private sauna session with every October stay.

Come wake up in the trees. Drink your coffee slowly. Wander around Nelson Creek. Explore the Grey Valley. Find a waterfall. Come back with muddy boots, soak your bones in the bath and spend the evening doing very little at all.

You’ll be glad you did when December turns up swinging.

Where the heck is Nelson Creek? Fair question. 😂

Tucked inland in the Grey Valley, Nelson Creek is one of those small West Coast places most people have never heard of — despite being around 20 minutes from Greymouth, 45 minutes from Reefton and 45 minutes from Punakaiki.

It has historic gold-mining walks, an old hand-cut tunnel, a suspension bridge, gold fossicking, a beautiful swimming hole, a classic country pub and easy access to Blackball, Lake Brunner and the Paparoa Track.

And it also happens to be home to Te Aka Treehouse. 🌿

Spring has officially arrived on the West Coast. 🌿

Which means longer days, road trips, swimming holes, forest walks, evenings under the stars… and summer suddenly doesn’t feel quite so far away.

If you’re starting to think about school holidays, a spring escape or where you want to spend a few slow days this summer, consider this your little reminder that the West Coast is very, very good at getting you away from it all.
