7.30am update:
• Eleven firefighting crews supported by two helicopters are continuing to work on the multiple fire sites in the Kaikoura area this morning.
• Conditions are cool with a light breeze this morning. Winds are forecast to strengthen during the day with gusts of 60km/hr or more this afternoon.
• We will make a full assessment today, to confirm the extent of the areas that have been affected. A fire investigation team has begun work to establish the origin and cause of the fires.
• An Incident Management Team has been established and we expect them to be operational until Friday.
• We will be meeting the affected homeowners this morning and arranging managed access to their properties where necessary. The area remains closed to the public while firefighting efforts continue.
• State Highway 1 has reopened but please be aware that all the side roads between Kaikoura and Hapuku are closed.
