A beautiful way to slow down this summer 🚆

The Ruapehu Viaduct Explorer runs on Saturday 28 February, taking you from National Park to Ohakune and back across some of the most iconic viaducts in the country.

If you’re going, Ongarue Valley Retreat is a quiet place to stay before or after big skies, peaceful nights, and space to breathe looking over the Little Hikurangi Hills.

🌋 Ring of Fire Volcanic Ultra & Relay 27–29 March

With the Ring of Fire making its return to Ruapehu this March, we’re looking forward to welcoming walkers, runners, support crews and families into the region.

Ongarue Valley Retreat is a peaceful place to base yourself before or after the event a little away from the crowds, with space to rest, recover, and reset before travelling on.

If you’re heading this way for Ring of Fire and are still looking for somewhere calm and comfortable to stay, feel free to get in touch 😊

Wishing everyone a safe and unforgettable time on the mountain.

Training for the Ring of Fire Ultra (100km)? 🔥

The Timber Trail (84km) is a perfect long, steady point-to-point training run to build endurance, time-on-feet and mental resilience without race-day pressure.

If you stay with us, you start your day by taking the shuttle 200 metres from our gate to the Pureora trailhead, then run the full 84km south back to Ongarue finishing within a few minutes of your accommodation.

No car relocations, no loops, no repeats just a clean, committed long run followed by a proper shower, food, rest and sleep.

Finally, the sign is up at the road.

After a season of patience and waiting, Ongarue Valley Retreat now stands openly where it belongs nestled into the hills of Ongarue.

This place has always been about space.
Space to breathe.
Space to reset.
Space to feel grounded again.

Proud of what’s been built here with integrity, patience, and heart.
You’re very welcome

Planning your Tongariro adventure? Here’s what our guests are saying!

We recently welcomed Daniel and his partner while they were in the region to complete the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and we’re so grateful for their kind words:

✨ “We chose this wonderful place for our Tongariro Passing tour. It's located in a strategic position from where you can visit many places in the region like the Tongariro National Park or the Waitomo Caves. Breakfast is lovely and the view is breathtaking.”
Daniel K., 5-star Google Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
