🎬 Did you know one of New Zealand's most iconic films was made right here in our backyard?
Smash Palace (1981) was filmed extensively at Horopito Motors Wreckers on State Highway 4 between Taumarunui and Ohakune. Home to the largest vintage car dismantling yard in Australasia, it's an iconic stop in its own right.
If you're staying with us in August, this special screening at the historic Theatre Royal in Raetihi is a great chance to experience a classic piece of Kiwi cinema and perhaps visit the original filming location while you're exploring the region.
Another great reason to take the scenic route through Ruapehu. 🚗🎬
🎬 A New Zealand cinema classic returns to the big screen!
Step back in time with Smash Palace (1981), Roger Donaldson's iconic drama-thriller starring Bruno Lawrence as Al, a former race car driver running a rural wrecking yard known as "Smash Palace."
What makes this film even more special for our region? Much of Smash Palace was filmed right here in the stunning Ruapehu district, showcasing landscapes and locations that locals may recognise.
