This is one of the reasons I love calling the Central North Island home. ❄️

A winter day on Ruapehu, then back to the peace and quiet of the valley.

After the recent snowfall, the mountain is looking incredible and it’s a pretty special time to explore this part of New Zealand.

There’s so much more to a Ruapehu winter than a day on the slopes. Take the road less travelled, explore a little further, and make the journey part of the experience.

Snow days. Country nights.

One of this morning's visitors. 💙

This beautiful kōtare (sacred kingfisher) was perched in a tree beside the house, keeping a watchful eye on its surroundings.

With the Ongarue River running along the bottom of the farm, we're lucky to see these stunning native birds from time to time. It's always a special moment when one decides to stop by.

One of the things we enjoy most about living here is supporting local businesses.

If you're travelling through Taumarunui or staying with us at Ongarue Valley Retreat, it's worth calling into the local bakery for one of these legendary steak pies. Made with quality local meat supplied by Absolute Meats, they're a favourite with locals for good reason.

Great food is all part of exploring the Ruapehu and King Country region. 🥧

🎬 Did you know one of New Zealand's most iconic films was made right here in our backyard?

Smash Palace (1981) was filmed extensively at Horopito Motors Wreckers on State Highway 4 between Taumarunui and Ohakune. Home to the largest vintage car dismantling yard in Australasia, it's an iconic stop in its own right.

If you're staying with us in August, this special screening at the historic Theatre Royal in Raetihi is a great chance to experience a classic piece of Kiwi cinema and perhaps visit the original filming location while you're exploring the region.

Another great reason to take the scenic route through Ruapehu. 🚗🎬

🎬 A New Zealand cinema classic returns to the big screen!

Step back in time with Smash Palace (1981), Roger Donaldson's iconic drama-thriller starring Bruno Lawrence as Al, a former race car driver running a rural wrecking yard known as "Smash Palace."

What makes this film even more special for our region? Much of Smash Palace was filmed right here in the stunning Ruapehu district, showcasing landscapes and locations that locals may recognise.

Join us at the Theatre Royal Est 1915, Raetihi on 15 August for a screening of this landmark Kiwi film.
🕕 Doors open: 6.00pm
🎥 Movie starts: 7.00pm
💲 Tickets: $15 at the door
🍽️ Supper included

We recently welcomed honeymoon guests to Ongarue Valley Retreat with a personalised welcome card and a few chocolates waiting in their room.

Originally staying for one night, they decided to extend their visit by another night so they could spend more time exploring the Ruapehu region, including a trip up Mt Ruapehu.

It's moments like these that remind us that there's so much to see and do in the heart of the Central North Island and we're always happy to help guests make the most of their stay.

We love adding little touches that make our guests feel at home.

One of the advantages of staying in Ongarue is that you're in the middle of it all, without feeling like you are.

Ride the Timber Trail New Zealand, explore Forgotten World Adventures, stop for lunch at Trunk Coffee House in Taumarunui, or head over to Ohakune to enjoy local food, a tasting at Ruapehu Distillery, and views of Mt Ruapehu.

Wherever the day takes you, Ongarue Valley Retreat is a comfortable place to return to.
