Secluded, tranquil, private and yet still only a short distance from Taupo's restaurants and attractions. Whakaipo Lodge offers two beautifully appointed suites, each with its own private patio. Guests can relax in front of the log fire in the lodge lounge, or sit in the gardens, under a market umbrella and be entertained by native bird life, while enjoying a lovely New Zealand w**e. Perhaps wander around the gardens and farm and say hello to our friendly sheep.

Great news for Mapara Valley! A new publicly accessible automated external defibrillator (AED) has been installed at Whakaipo Lodge, thanks to an amazing community fundraising effort led by lodge owners Garth and Angie London.

Mapara Valley, on the northern shore of Lake Taupō, includes Whakaipo Bay, a favourite spot for swimmers, boaties, walkers and mountain bikers on the Great Lake Trail. For visitors and residents alike, the lack of nearby emergency cardiac equipment was becoming a real concern. The closest public AED was in Acacia Bay, a 15- to 20-minute return trip even in quiet traffic. In a cardiac arrest, every minute matters.

Fundraising kicked off in 2025 and centred on Whakaipo Lodge’s 12th summer concert in February 2026. Lodge team member Lynda Nightingale also held a birthday fundraiser, and the Acacia Bay Residents Association helped with logistics and promotion. Thanks to everyone’s generosity, the campaign raised enough to purchase and install the AED.

The weatherproof AED was installed on the outside wall of Whakaipo Lodge on 1 October 2026 and is available 24/7. It is registered with the AED Locations app, Hato Hone St John and the 111 call center.

The historic Passchendaele (Ab 608) steam engine led a special Glenbrook Vintage Railway excursion departing from Taumarunui today. Passengers stepped back in time within heritage carriages, celebrating New Zealand’s rich rail history. The beautifully restored locomotive steamed into the scenic heart of the King Country, Te Rohe Potae. Nostalgia and excitement for young and old.
