Mayor Benjamin Magalong urged residents and barangay officials to help address the growing problem of pet waste and stray dogs, warning that irresponsible pet ownership is contributing to the Summer Capitalβs river pollution woes.
The Mayor said f***l coliform is no longer the primary concern in the cityβs water systems, but waste from dogs has become an increasing environmental issue.
He criticized irresponsible pet owners who allow their dogs to roam freely and leave waste on public roads and waterways.
βSome pet owners open their gates in the afternoon just to let their dogs defecate outside and then let them back in later. That is disrespectful and irresponsible,β Magalong said.
He added that the city government, through the City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO) and the City Veterinary and Agriculture Office (CVAO), has intensified its campaign against stray dogs with authorities catching an average of six to nine stray dogs daily in just one area.
However, the Mayor stressed that the responsibility should not fall solely on the local government, calling on barangay officials to take a more active role.
βThere are barangays that are very proactive in dealing with stray dogs, but there are also some that remain inactive,β he said.
Magalong also appealed to residents to practice responsible pet ownership, noting that pet waste is often improperly disposed of in drainage canals, creeks, and rivers, worsening water pollution.
The Mayor shared that he personally owns 11 dogs and ensures that their waste is properly collected and managed.
Despite the challenges, Magalong noted significant improvements in the condition of the cityβs rivers and disclosed that pollution levels in the Balili River have decreased dramatically from quadrillions to trillions, while the Bued River has improved from trillions to billions.
βThe quality of our rivers is improving significantly, but we need to sustain our efforts,β he said.-Gaby B. Keith
