IWANG AD BATAD
Celebrating the Ifugao Harvest and Cultural Heritage
Iwang ad Batad is the annual Tinawon Rice Harvest Festival celebrated by the indigenous community of Batad in Banaue, Ifugao. The festival highlights the successful harvest of tinawon, a prized heirloom rice variety that holds deep cultural, spiritual, and historical significance among the Ifugao people.
The term Iwang refers to the traditional method of harvesting rice by hand, a practice that has been passed down through generations. More than a celebration of agricultural abundance, the festival serves as a tribute to the enduring traditions, values, and identity of the Batad community.
Held over three days, the festival features a variety of cultural activities that showcase the rich heritage of the Ifugao. These include traditional rituals, indigenous games, cultural performances, and the Search for Bugan ay Batad, a cultural pageant that highlights the beauty, knowledge, and traditions of Ifugao women.
One of the unique aspects of the celebration is the βTrek for a Cause,β an advocacy activity that promotes community development and supports local initiatives. The event also attracts visitors who wish to experience the culture of Batad while exploring its world-famous rice terraces.
Beyond the festivities, Iwang ad Batad serves as an important occasion for the community to honor their ancestors, strengthen cultural identity, and encourage the preservation of traditional practices. It also promotes sustainable tourism and raises awareness about the protection of the Batad Rice Terraces, which form part of the UNESCO-recognized Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras.
Through Iwang ad Batad, the people of Batad continue to celebrate their agricultural heritage while ensuring that their culture and traditions remain alive for future generations.
