🧳 Unboxing Memories: The "Bagong Bayani" Era
Cleaning out some boxes today and stumbled upon old IDs from my OFW days. Seeing them brought back memories—and honestly, a bit of pride! Remember when the government officially labeled us the "Bagong Bayani" (Modern-Day Heroes)? It was the ultimate, top-tier pep talk to keep those remittances flowing smoothly! 💸😊
But true to most hero storylines, that legendary "Hero Badge" didn’t exactly come with superpowers or VIP privileges.
The "Hero" Experience Includes:
The Departure: That unforgettable, nerve-wracking first exit from the Philippines. That long queue, facing the intense, suspicious, soul-searching stare of the immigration officer just to get a passport stamp. Shoutout to my fellow OFWs—I count myself incredibly lucky to have survived the dreaded tanim-bala era intact! 🛑🔫. (They have no idea that before getting to that booth, we have been through purgatory of confusing torturous lines: from getting NBI clearance, passport, and submitting applications to cramped sketchy offices along Mabini street in Malate - surviving on pure hope, adrenaline, and 20-peso banana cues while praying your papers actually go through.)
The Welcome: After years of isolation to some distant post, a kundiman serenade greets you at NAIA when you arrive. 🎶 The ultimate reward that I have experienced. "Welcome Home, Heroes!" 💪
The Reality: It turns out the "Bagong Bayani" status has an expiration date. The magic badge automatically vaporizes the exact moment your contract ends and the dollars stop coming in.
I guess the intention behind the title was noble—or maybe just great marketing! Either way, to all my fellow ex-heroes and current heroes out there: salute! We survived the grind, earned our stripes, and have stories to tell. Let us continue holding down the fort in our respective hometowns now... (Amidst these continuous government drama) 🇵🇭
