18th century chapel of Barrio Manticao
( Untold story of Manticao)
Mantikaw St. Anthony de Padua is a visita or chapel under St Michael de Archangel Church of Iligan in the 18th century (,narratives from Land of Promise and Sudden Death, Library of Spain ).
Because of the series of raids in 1885, 1890, 1891, this chapel was ransacked, destroyed, and in those years, the chapel was burned down twice.
But do you know the exact location of this chapel?
The present sitio "Manticao daan" (old Manticao) is the old center of this barrrio in 18th century where the chapel in the story is located. Manticao daan is now known as the bingkahan or road side stalls selling rice cakes.
If you drop by at the bingkahan, remember the story of the local people of barrio Manticao who were killed and kidnapped that made this town vigilant and resilient.
Early 1950s, the chapel was transferred to its present site right behind the townhall.
(The Moro fought for religious rather than political reasons, back story related )
