Sorsogon State University-Graduate School (SorSU-GS) is using direct input from government agencies and local stakeholders to identify policy issues that require research and evidence, strengthening the universityโ€™s role in supporting government planning and policy development in Sorsogon and the Bicol Region.

The Sorsogon Policy Research Center (SorPReCe), under the Office of Research, Extension, and Training (SorSU-OVPRET), conducted a Stakeholder Consultation and Priority Setting for the Government Policy Research Agenda on September 29, 2026, at the SorSU Dormtel, Sorsogon City Campus.

Representatives from the Department of Economy, Planning and Development (DEPDev), Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Albay (DENR-Albay), Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office-Sorsogon (PENRO-Sorsogon), LIKAS, Local Government Unit of Bulan, Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), and Municipal Planning and Development Office-Bulan (MPDO-Bulan), together with SorSU faculty members and the SorSU-Graduate School, shared their perspectives on pressing government concerns.

Based on current government needs, participants identified priority concerns, examined policy issues, and proposed areas for research. The outputs will provide a basis for identifying research areas that can generate relevant evidence for government planning and policy development in Sorsogon and Region V.

Dr. Ryan V. Dio, proponent of the Stakeholder Consultation and Priority-Agenda Setting, presented the rationale of the activity and facilitated the consultation.

The agenda-setting process will continue with the SorPReCe Policy Research Agenda Setting on October 6, 2026. (SorSU-PIO)

Understanding how infectious diseases spread and how they can be prevented is essential to maintaining a healthy campus. To promote health awareness and preventive care, Sorsogon State University (SorSU), through its Health Services Unit, under the Office of the Student Development and Services, conducted a Holistic Preventive Health Program on September 30, 2026, at SorSU Dormtel, Sorsogon City Campus.

The program covered sexually transmitted infections (STIs), respiratory infectious diseases, and anti-influenza vaccination, addressing health concerns that may affect students and university personnel.

Dr. Medin J. Nicolas (Head, Health Services Unit) delivered the welcome remarks, followed by a message from Dr. Telesforo D. Escoto (Campus Director, Sorsogon City Campus). Ms. Maynelle D. Gredoรฑa (Campus Health Coordinator, Sorsogon City Campus) introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Karen Faye Nava-Garcia (District Health Officer), who discussed infectious disease prevention, practical ways to reduce exposure to infections, and the role of vaccination in protecting individual and community health. She also discussed dengue awareness and preventive measures.

Through the program, SorSU continues to promote health education and preventive care by encouraging students and personnel to make informed health decisions and practice measures that help maintain a safer campus environment. The activity wrapped up with closing remarks from Dr. Maria Crisanta E. Mella (Director, OSDS). (SorSU PIO)

Sorsogon State University - Sorsogon City Campus, through its internationalization initiatives, spearheaded a learning session on โ€œAdvancing the Sustainable Development Goals through Research, Curriculum, and Community Resilienceโ€ on September 10, 2026, at the SorSU Dormtel, featuring Dr. Venkat Bakthavatchaalam, International Visiting Lecturer (IVL) from Cardiff University School of Engineering, as the resource speaker.

The activity engaged Sorsogon City Campus faculty members in a broader discussion on how curriculum, research, community engagement, and classroom-based applications can translate the SDGs into meaningful institutional and societal actions.

Dr. Venkat further highlighted the interconnected social, environmental, and economic dimensions of the SDGs and the significance of an interdisciplinary approach in applying them meaningfully. He underscored the crucial role of educators in equipping students not only with technical competencies but also with sustainability-related skills, critical reflection, and a deeper understanding of how they can address societal challenges, including social justice, conflict, marine pollution, rising sea levels, ocean acidification, misinformation, and concerns associated with artificial intelligenceโ€™s reliance on available data.

The morning session centered on advancing the SDGs through curriculum, while the afternoon event focused on research and community resilience, followed by an open forum.

The activity underscores SorSUโ€™s sustained efforts to align quality education, research, international collaboration, and community-responsive initiatives with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. (SorSU PIO)
