🔬🌊 Expedição Ciência-Aventura ao Largo da Costa Alentejana

Entre 25 e 27 de julho, dias após o lançamento do primeiro flutuador Argo português sobre o Canhão de Setúbal 🚢 em apoio ao IPMA, uma nova aventura científica rumou ao mar: a BiGLe, em parceria com a Fundação dos Mares e a Associação SulSub, lançou-se numa expedição costeira entre Melides e a Comporta.
Com o apoio do IPMA e do Aquário Vasco da Gama, a missão teve como objetivo conhecer melhor os recifes rochosos subtidais na zona fótica — habitats marinhos protegidos e ricos em biodiversidade.

📍 O que fizemos nesta jornada?
✔️ Mergulhos em zonas com potencial de recife
✔️ Registo de imagem submarina
✔️ Recolha de amostras de sedimento e fitoplancton
✔️ Medição da temperatura da coluna de água

Esta foi mais do que uma simples saída de campo. Foi um ensaio geral para o futuro: preparar a ER Libries para expedições científicas prolongadas, em mar aberto, com recolha sistemática de dados e apoio total à equipa de mergulhadores 👨‍🔬👩‍🔬.

🎯 O objetivo?
Estabelecer estações de monitorização permanentes ou recorrentes, apoiar uma monitorização marinha cooperativa e abrir caminho a uma operação plurianual com várias entidades — nacionais e locais — em prol do conhecimento e proteção dos nossos mares.

💙 Para a BiGLe, os resultados são claros: um enorme sucesso e uma motivação renovada para os próximos passos.
A ciência pode (e deve) ser vivida com entusiasmo, espírito de missão e cooperação.
Toda a informação recolhidas será partilhada com o IPMA e o Aquário Vasco da Gama, que para além da análiise das imagens submarinas realizarão o tratamento das amostras de sedimento e de plancton, respetivamente.

🔬🌊 Science-Adventure Expedition off the Alentejo Coast
Between July 25 and 27, just days after the launch of the first Portuguese Argo float over the Setúbal Canyon 🚢 in support of IPMA, a new scientific adventure set sail: BiGLe, in partnership with Fundação dos Mares and Associação SulSub, embarked on a coastal expedition between Melides and Comporta.
With support from IPMA and the Vasco da Gama Aquarium, the mission aimed to better understand the subtidal rocky reefs in the photic zone — protected marine habitats rich in biodiversity.

📍 What did we do during this journey?
✔️ Dives in areas with reef potential
✔️ Underwater image recording
✔️ Collection of sediment and phytoplankton samples
✔️ Measurement of water column temperature

This was more than just a field trip. It was a full-scale rehearsal for the future: preparing ER Libries for extended scientific expeditions in open sea, with systematic data collection and full support for the diving team 👨‍🔬👩‍🔬.

🎯 The goal?
To establish permanent or recurring monitoring stations, support cooperative science, and pave the way for a multi-year operation with several national and local entities — all in the name of knowledge and protection of our seas.

💙 For BiGLe, the results are clear: a huge success and renewed motivation for the next steps.
Science can (and should) be lived with enthusiasm, a sense of mission, and collaboration.

All information collected will be shared with IPMA and the Vasco da Gama Aquarium, which, in addition to the underwater images analysis, will process the sediment and plankton samples, respectively.

Lançamento do Primeiro Flutuador Argo Português no Canhão de Setúbal

No passado dia 21 de julho de 2025, foi realizada com sucesso a operação de lançamento do primeiro flutuador Argo português, um marco significativo para a observação oceânica nacional e para a integração de Portugal na rede global de monitorização oceânica Argo.
A operação foi conduzida por uma equipa do Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), liderada pelo Professor Miguel Santos, com o apoio técnico e logístico da Blue Geo Lighthouse (BiGLe), que disponibilizou a embarcação científica ER Libries para a missão.
O flutuador foi lançado no Canhão de Setúbal, a cerca de 25 milhas náuticas a Sudoeste do Cabo Espichel, numa zona de grande profundidade, superior a 2000 metros, reunindo as condições ideais para a plena operação do sensor.
O Programa Argo é uma iniciativa internacional que opera uma rede de mais de 3000 flutuadores autónomos distribuídos pelo Oceano Global, com capacidade para medir temperatura, salinidade, pressão e correntes oceânicas até 2000 metros de profundidade, transmitindo os dados em tempo real via satélite em cada emersão. Estes dados são fundamentais para o estudo das alterações climáticas globais, para a previsão oceanográfica operacional, e para o desenvolvimento de modelos de circulação oceânica e clima.
Com esta iniciativa, Portugal dá um passo decisivo na sua contribuição para os esforços globais de monitorização e conhecimento do Oceano, reforçando a sua capacidade científica e operacional em matéria de observação sistemática e contínua do ambiente marinho profundo.
A colaboração entre o IPMA e a BiGLe neste projeto demonstra a importância da articulação entre instituições públicas e privadas na valorização do conhecimento científico nacional, ao serviço da sustentabilidade do Oceano.

Deployment of the First Portuguese Argo Float in the Setúbal Canyon

On 21 July 2025, a significant milestone was achieved in Portugal’s contribution to global ocean observation with the successful deployment of the first Portuguese Argo float.
The operation was carried out by a team from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), under the leadership of Professor Miguel Santos, with technical and logistical support from Blue Geo Lighthouse (BiGLe), which provided its scientific vessel ER Libries for the mission.
The float was deployed in the Setúbal Canyon, approximately 25 nautical miles Southwest of Cabo Espichel, in a deep-sea area exceeding 2000 meters, offering ideal conditions for the float’s full operation.
The Argo Programme is an international initiative operating a network of over 3,000 autonomous floats distributed throughout the Global Ocean. These floats measure temperature, salinity, pressure, and ocean currents down to 2000 metres, transmitting real-time data via satellite. This information is essential for understanding global climate change, improving operational ocean forecasting, and advancing ocean circulation and climate models.
With this initiative, Portugal takes a decisive step in contributing to Global Ocean monitoring efforts, enhancing its national scientific and operational capacity for systematic and continuous observation of the deep marine environment.
This joint effort between IPMA and BiGLe underscores the importance of collaboration between public institutions and private stakeholders in promoting Portuguese scientific excellence in service of Ocean sustainability.

Mais uma vez a BiGLe marcou presença no Curso de Segurança Marítima organizado pelo Atlantic Centre, desta feita, na sua quinta edição que decorreu em Ponta Delgada, nos Açores, entre os dias 2 e 5 de junho. Este ano, subordinado ao tema "Climate Change & Security Challenges in the Atlantic", o evento reuniu mais de uma centena de participantes de mais de trinta nacionalidades diferentes, e contou com a colaboração da FLAD, do IDN e outros de parceiros internacionais, todos sob a coordenação do Calm Nuno Bragança.
É manifesto o interesse dos já 28 países Europeus, Africanos, Norte e Sul Americanos e das Caraíbas que hoje são membros desta organização, em caminhar em conjunto, e no modo muito próprio do Atlantic Centre, e, assim, contribuir para uma visão multi-lateral e multi-cardinal da cooperação pan-atlântica e para a realização das suas futuras ações.
Foi uma honra para a BiGLe poder apoiar novamente o Atlantic Centre nesta ocasião, participando na mesa redonda inaugural "Climate Change in the Atlantic: A threat without borders" e nas sessões temáticas "Climate Change and Critical Infrastructure in the Atlantic: Adaptation measures from the Atlantic" (ambas moderadas por João Ribeiro) e "Climate Changes' impacts and the Role of Industry and Private Sector" (com a participação de António Nunes).
Testemunhámos a alta qualidade do evento, o qual merece o nosso elogio público aos seus organizadores, aguardamos com expectativa pelas próximas iniciativas do Atlantic Centre e muito nos honrará poder continuar este compromisso de sucesso rumo à excelência.

Once again BiGLe was present, this time at the fifth edition of the Maritime Security Course organized by the Atlantic Centre, which took place in Ponta Delgada, Azores, between June 2nd and 5th. This year, under the theme "Climate Change & Security Challenges in the Atlantic", the event brought together more than a hundred participants from more than thirty different nationalities, and involved the collaboration of FLAD, IDN and other international partners, all under the coordination of RAdm Nuno Bragança.
It is clear that the 28 countries from Europe, Africa, North and South America and Caribbe, that are members of this organization stand interested in walking together, and in the very proper way of the Atlantic Centre, and thus contributing to a multi-lateral and multi-cardinal vision of pan-Atlantic cooperation and to the realization of its future actions
It was an honor for BiGLe to be able to support again the Atlantic Centre, this time by engaging in the inaugural round table "Climate Change in the Atlantic: A threat without borders" and in the thematic sessions "Climate Change and Critical Infrastructure in the Atlantic: Adaptation measures from the Atlantic" (both moderated by João Ribeiro) and "Climate Changes' impacts and the Role of Industry and Private Sector" (with the participation of António Nunes).
We witnessed the high-quality of the event, which deserves our public praise to the organizers, and looking forward to hearing from Atlantic Centre soon regarding future initiatives, and we're very honored to continuing this successful engagement towards excellency.

Na passada semana a BiGLe, em apoio às atividades do IPMA, participou nos te**es de equipamentos e no treino de equipa, com vista ao desenvolvimento de futuras atividades de monitorização do meio marinho na costa portuguesa.
Esta ação serviu para realizar uma primeira fase de verificações acerca da operacionalidade de vários tipos de equipamentos sensores e de amostragem, para além da operação ROV e de acesso e comunicação integrada de dados, operações estas realizadas a partir de uma plataforma de custo-efetivo – a ER Libries. Esta e as futuras ações previstas, são promovidas pelo IPMA e apoiadas pelo AUDAX_ISCTE – Centro de Inovação e Empreendedorismo, com o apoio da BiGLe, no âmbito do projeto AI4PA (Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Public Administration).

Last week, BiGLe, in support of IPMA's activities, participated in equipment tests and team training at sea, with a view to developing future marine environment monitoring activities on the Portuguese coast. This action served to carry out a first phase of checks on the operability of various types of sensor and sampling equipment, in addition to the ROV operation and integrated data access and communication, operations carried out from a cost-effective platform – ER Libries. This and the future actions planned are promoted by IPMA and supported by AUDAX_ISCTE – Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, with the support of BiGLe, within the scope of the AI4PA (Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Public Administration) project.
