If I liked the word barefoot luxury, it would describe me well, but as it is, I hate it. I prefer to call my travel style something between dashing and daring. I believe that luxury has nothing to do with money, but rather with authentic experiences. I like adventures and street food, I want to travel as sustainable as possible and listen more than talk. otels with history, and artisan products with a story. Apparently I am a truffle pig for places with a certain something and I like to share. The Midnight Blue Elephant is a collection of souvenirs whether that is a story, an image or one of those truffles. Things that you can take away after a trip and that will take you away into different worlds when you have to stay put.

In the Crete countryside this little mermaid turns into a wildflower girl.

Going back to Greece was not on my travel bingo card this year but after my mother had a fall and I had to cut my Cape Town trip short to help, my calendar opened up. And who am I to complain about an impromptu Greece trip before the holiday crowds arrived?

To be fair, Crete was already pretty busy even in May so I took a little road trip to Cabanon concrete retreat , a collection of two tiny homes surrounded by olive groves. The perfect place to disconnect though there is wifi and a suitcase full of local wine. At night however, the silence was loud and powerful. Just what I needed.

I am grateful for this life of mine that I have created and am still shaping every day. Not always perfect, not always without errors and issues and wrong turns, but always by my choosing. Even with lemons thrown in my path…

I know I am a little late to the party, but I still love the idea of doing a throwback to 2016. What a year that was!

I started that year back in my old home, Cape Town, went to look for leopards at , and hugged a camel in Morocco. I also met the man whom, at some point, I thought I would marry in Scotland, and went to Sri Lanka for the first time, a place that would catch me so nicely when this relationship crashed and burned a year later.

Luckily, my career fared better, and I got to take one of my favorite press trips ever with - monkeys, orangutans, and dragons, oh my, and so many memories were made on this trip. And my love for Indonesia has stood the test of time.

The year finished just below the Arctic Circle, where I saw Northern Lights for the first time and had a Husky puppy named after me.

2026 is off to a similar start as I am currently in Cape Town, and yes, flights to Indonesia are already booked too. I like these throwbacks because they make me truly grateful for seeing what a beautiful life I have created for myself, occasional heartbreak and complete lack of surfing skills included.
