Gail was born in Muir Pam, a Karen Hill Tribe village high in the mountains just upriver from Kanlaya’s.

Her family are subsistence rice farmers but continue to forage much of their food from the jungle and the river, an echo of her ancestral past as Hunter Gatherers. They are an ancient tribe who over centuries migrated down the Himalayan massif from Mongolia and Tibet, to settle in this area over 100 years ago. They have retained their own language, weave their own cloth and preserve their culture which has been little changed by modern times.

At 18 years old Gail bought the site where Kanlaya’s Thailand now stands, recovering it from the jungle by selling exquisite weavings from her village to visitors coming to visit the famous Tham Lod Cave nearby where 250,000 swifts come to roost before dusk - an absolute must see if you’re visiting!

Gail also spent a several years in Europe travelling, returning with her English partner Philip to build this magical property in the very midst of Mae Hong Son’s breath-taking scenery.

It is an absolute special delight and privilege for her to introduce guests to a world of tribal culture and to visit remote and seldom visited places most visitors never see. Gail adores greeting guests from around the world to this enchanting place in the very midst of the Mae Hong Son wilderness with spectacular views to the Burmese border, forest and mighty river Lang which skirts our boundary.

She always has the warmest smile, kindest heart and she will simply make you feel at home 💛

“ During our tour through Thailand in Oktober / November 2023, we stayed two days at Kanlaya’s Eyrie Homestay. When we arrived, we decided to take the Honeymoon suite due to the fantastic view towards the Myanmar border and the aesthetical interior with a strong personal touch. We had dinner at the outside terrace both days and we would rate these, without hesitation, as the very best we ever had during our several trips in Thailand. Philip and Gale were wonderful and lovely hosts and they prepared fantastic local specialties for us. The evening atmosphere in their wonderful courtyard was absolutely amazing.

For the tour with our rental car along the Myanmar border, we received a lot of extremely useful hints and recommendations from Philip. Additionally, we were extremely lucky with the weather conditions throughout the day so that we were able to take excellent photos of the unique landscape where we did not meet any other tourists.

We enjoyed our likewise excellent breakfast on another terrace with a beautiful morning view towards the winding river and the surrounding hills. In a scale of 1 to 10 points we would rate our stay at Kanlaya’s clearly with 12 points. We can only strongly recommend Kanlaya’s to all visitors who are looking for an exceptional experience with a friendly and familiar touch.
