We followed the sound of a hammer echoing through the hills of Ladakh’s Rhumbak village and discovered a rare craft, and an extraordinary craftsman.
An unplanned encounter with Rigzin in the heart of the Hemis National Park region, turned into one of our most memorable discoveries. We had seen the handcrafted copper vessels adorned with brass details in traditional Ladakhi kitchens and wondered who still made them.
The answer found us.
At 61, Rigzin travels across Ladakh, crafting these beautiful jars, teapots, and serving vessels for families who continue to cherish tradition. He is the last in his family to carry forward this craft- one that now survives through only a handful of artisans in the Himalayan desert.
His story left us inspired, but also wondering- in an age of plastic and disposables, what does the future hold for such traditions?
