This month, we celebrate the remarkable legacy of esteemed hotelier, Past President, and fellow Skålleague, Steven H. Sasaya.
After 18 outstanding years in Taiwan as the longest-serving General Manager of Hotel Royal-Nikko Taipei, Mr. Sasaya will soon retire and return home to Japan. As a visionary hotelier, his crisis leadership during COVID-19 was exemplary—retaining all 300 employees with zero layoffs and no salary cuts, maintaining 100% employee satisfaction and high team morale throughout.
Beyond his extraordinary hotel milestones, community support, and sustainability awards, his contributions to Skål Taipei during his 2017–2018 presidency were transformative:
- Pioneered International Twinning: Established the first joint Skål Twinning Agreement linking all Taiwan and Japan chapters (connecting Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung with Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya).
- Enriched Club Traditions: Introduced World Tourism Day to our official event calendar.
- Modernized Operations: Upgraded our digital presence with a fully revamped website.
- Empowered Leadership: Created an encouraging environment where board members were empowered to take full ownership of major projects—leading to a club member being recognized with the prestigious Skål Asia Personality of the Year award during his term.
Thank you, Skalleågue Sasaya, for your dedicated service, wisdom, and warm friendship. Your legacy in Taipei will be proudly protected and carried forward. We wish you every happiness in your next chapter—until we meet again! 🥂✈️
