You can be ready for your next chapter and still have meaningful work to do in this one.

I’ve been reflecting on Philippians 4:12, where Paul describes learning contentment in different circumstances. There is a leadership lesson here, too.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆. 𝗜𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝘆𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲.

It means being fully present while you discern and take your next steps.

Sometimes we become so focused on the next opportunity that we overlook what is available today:

A relationship we can strengthen.
A lesson we can carry forward.
A contribution that could make someone else’s path easier.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱—b𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄.

Where you are is not necessarily where you will remain. You can still lead with intention while you are there.

Leadership is an inside job.

Have you ever walked away from an experience and realized it affected you more than you thought?

Maybe it changed your mood. Your tone. Your patience. The way you showed up with the next person.

We can’t control every experience or every person’s behavior—but we are responsible for what we allow to take root within us.

Because 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

Frustration becomes our tone.
Disappointment becomes defensiveness.
Fear becomes control.
And before we know it, someone else’s ugly is showing up in us.

That’s why 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻.

Before leading the room, tend to the room within you.

Ask yourself:

What is happening within me?
What is it producing through me?
Is it shaping me into the leader I want to become?

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱.

Strong leaders steward their inner lives so pressure doesn’t decide who they become.

I get to do work I love.

𝗜 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗴𝗼-𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘀, 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀—a𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 so they can show up fully in the moments that matter.

Community transformation trips like the one my team took to Rwanda give me another opportunity to do what I love.

Develop leaders.

Create space for people to discover and use their gifts.

Watch people stretch, navigate uncertainty and discover capacity they may not have known they had.

And somewhere in the process, I get changed too.

Whether I'm on a mission field, facilitating a retreat, leading a workshop or coaching an executive, I keep coming back to the same truth:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝘀.

For the past few weeks, I've shared stories from Rwanda about courage, forgiveness, partnership, unity, leadership and significance.

They happened in Rwanda, but they were never only about Rwanda.

They were about how we choose to live and lead.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆-𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.

Sometimes, you need to become more intentional about how you show up for what's already there.

Over the past few weeks, I've shared a lot about moving from success to significance.

I've shared that significance multiplies.
That transformation takes a team.
That some things are simply too big for one leader to carry.

And perhaps this is one more piece:

𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀.

Because when we boarded the plane, the work didn't stop.

Africa New Life Ministries continued doing what they do every day—walking alongside families, developing women, caring for children and creating opportunities that can change the trajectory of a life.

And our partnership continued too.

One of the women we met was Marceline.

She is a mother who is working toward greater stability for her family through Africa New Life's Women's Development Program.

She was the only scholarship recipient whose scholarship was partially funded.

𝗦𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆.
T𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝘅.

Learning about the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda carried an emotional weight for our team.

Schedule adjustments unintentionally squeezed out some of the prayer and processing time I had planned—an oversight I own and will learn from.

But in the space I didn't fill, team members pursued God privately, and the Holy Spirit met them with the comfort and counsel I never could.

That experience reminded me:

As the leader, it wasn't my job to make every path smooth.

My responsibility was to prepare well, create space, equip the team, pay attention and respond when needed.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱.

When you care deeply about the people you lead, it’s easy to start carrying things that were never actually yours to carry.

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱.

What are you carrying that was never actually yours to carry?

Six of us boarded the plane to Rwanda.
But our team was bigger than six.
Three members of our team stayed home.

They weren’t in the photos.
They didn’t visit the families.
They didn’t stand beside us while we served.

But they were carrying the vision with us.

They were our intercessors—praying before we left, praying while we served and sometimes praying with us in real time as things unfolded thousands of miles away.

That experience reminded me:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.

Some execute.
Some challenge your thinking.
Some open doors.
Some encourage you.
Some protect what you’re building.
And some cover you in prayer.

Significant work was never meant to be carried alone.

So here’s my question for you:

𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂?

Sometimes what looks like a limitation in a person may be telling us something about the environment around them.

Mama Florence shared that many children arrive at the Africa New Life daycare malnourished and struggling to learn. Some struggle so much there are initially concerns they may have developmental challenges.

Then, with consistent nutrition, structure, care and opportunities to learn, children who once struggled begin to thrive.

Their potential didn't suddenly appear.

The environment gave that potential an opportunity to emerge.

That stayed with me.

Because as leaders, 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁, 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺.

What if we got curious first?

What don't we know? What conditions might be affecting their performance? Have we created an environment where they can grow?

Africa New Life also equips mothers with practical parenting skills so the environment supporting these children extends beyond the daycare and into their homes.

𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻, 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗱.

Two survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi shared their stories with us. One experienced devastation so profound that she did not speak for 12 years.

Then we heard from two perpetrators.

One had helped lead the genocide in his village. Today, he is helping lead a Peace Initiative working to create a new tomorrow—one where survivors and perpetrators can once again feel safe living as neighbors.

But there was another part of the story that was almost as difficult to comprehend.

The founder invited this man into the work of reconciliation—even though this same man had killed his parents.

Sit with that for a moment.

Their faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ is foundational to this extraordinary story of forgiveness and reconciliation.

But reconciliation didn’t happen through one courageous act.

It has required years of persistent, faithful work—survivors willing to heal, perpetrators willing to confess, repent and take responsibility, leaders willing to create space for what once seemed impossible, and a community willing to build a different future together.

It reminded me:

𝗡𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲.

Our team didn’t go to Rwanda to bring transformation. We stepped into work that was already happening and asked how we could contribute.

And although we have returned home, that partnership continues.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝘀.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀.

I watched this unfold in Rwanda.

One team member wrestled with finding a sense of purpose as we visited the homes of women in the development program.

Through prayer came a simple idea: every team member would touch a blanket and pray over it before we presented it to each woman. We asked God to make the blanket a tangible reminder of His presence, comfort, and faithfulness.

➼ What began with one person's uncertainty became a movement the entire team carried.

I saw it again when one team member stepped into an area of high giftedness despite a history of becoming physically sick before doing so.

➼ Her courageous yes activated the faith of the team. We surrounded her in prayer—and this time, the sickness never came.

And again when an extreme introvert courageously stepped out front to lead highly interactive activities.

➼Her yes activated the team's gift of encouragement. We rallied around her. And she soared.

Different gifts.
Different personalities.
Different assignments.
One mission.

𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲.

Know their strengths.
Get curious about what may be holding those strengths back.
Create the support that makes a courageous yes possible.

Sometimes a person's greatest contribution comes naturally.

And sometimes it's waiting just beyond their comfort zone.
