🌱 Did you know? As Black people, we are one with nature. This can be seen through the various nature-related traditions and customs of African peoples around the world. But this connection with nature also includes how our bodies work.

When Black people go out in the sun, the melanin in our bodies absorbs sun rays and turns it into powerful nutrients like Vitamin D, which our bodies use. This is an amazing feat!

And plants can do a similar thing! Plants contain chlorophyll, a green pigment that gives them their color. When this chlorophyll absorbs sun rays, it is transformed into nutrients like sugar, which the plant feeds on.

Isn’t that amazing? This means that melanin and chlorophyll perform similar functions.

Another connection is the importance of water. Plants need water to remain green and healthy. Likewise, melanin functions best when the body has ample amounts of water.

And finally we have the roots. A tree can only grow large and majestic when it has strong roots. So as Black people, we must stay connected to our roots (culture, identity, history) in order to become the best we can be.

As Marcus Garvey said “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”

🔥Scientists have studied melanin and chlorophyll. Check out the article here:https://www.nature.com/articles/npre.2007.1312.1.pdf

❤️🖤💚Happy Birthday to Marcus Garvey! We celebrate his day with one of his great quotes:

“Black men at Carthage, Black men of Ethiopia, of Timbuktu, of Alexandria, gave the likes of civilization to this world.”

It’s true, history shows us that the world started off as African! We find that Black peoples have seeded virtually every civilization known in history. And we can see that this contribution to civilization has continued into modern times.

Hannibal Barca contributed greatly to the world’s military knowledge in his battle against the Romans. He was the son of an African general named Hamilcar, a brilliant warrior himself. Hannibal used a combination of foot soldiers, weapons and even elephants in his battles! His war tactics were so brilliant that they are continuously studied today.

Empress Taytu is considered to be the reason why Ethiopia was never colonized. Through her political and military strategies, the Ethiopian army and government successfully defeated the Italians and drove them out of her territory. But after the war, Empress Taytu did a lot of work to modernize the nation of Ethiopia by providing widespread education, founding the capitol city Addis Ababa, and opening a hotel which still stands today.

Mansa Musa almost needs no introduction! We all know him as the richest person in human history, with a net worth estimated at over $400 Billion. But WHY was he so wealthy? It’s because he did such a great job of promoting commerce, education and artistry within the African nation of Mali. He is especially famous for opening a series of Mosques/Universities that attracted students from the world over.

So civilization is, has, and always will be seeded by Africans first. We are the trendsetters and originators. Just another great thing about being African!

🌟In African cultural systems, especially ancient ones, learning is an ongoing process.

Whether you are a child or a wizened elder, there was always more that you could learn. This is because the universe (or the creator) is so vast that there was always more to comprehend.

So to say, “I know everything” would be considered foolish in those times. In reality, even the master is still a student.

Happy Juneteenth! Contrary to popular belief, Juneteenth does NOT signify the end of slavery in all of the US. That was done by the passing of the 13th Amendment in December of 1865. June 19th (or Juneteenth) is a Black celebration which commemorates the day when enslaved Africans in Galveston, Texas (an island-city off the coast) were told about the Emancipation Proclamation by Union troops. This ended slavery in the state of Texas.

Two years earlier in 1863, Texas was still a Confederate state (one of the original 11 that formed “the South”). As a result, Texas was continuing to practice slavery. This attracted many whites (and the Africans they were enslaving) to the area.

But in January of that year, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation became effective, which stated that all enslaved Africans *in the 11 rebelling states* were free (the proclamation DID NOT free enslaved Africans everywhere. In the Union states, slavery was still legally practiced).

However, since Union troops had not yet reached all the Confederate states, they could not enforce the proclamation everywhere in the South. So slavery still existed in some of those areas. Galveston, Texas was one of them.

It took Union troops about 2 years to reach Galveston. On June 19th, 1865, a Union general had arrived on the island-city, and enforced the Emancipation Proclamation.

As a result, Black people in that area found out that they were now free, and they rejoiced! This was a victory long-fought-for over several generations. For each year that followed, Black people in Texas celebrated June 19th or “Juneteenth” as a day of freedom.

Later, in December of that year, the Union had gained control over the US, and passed the 13th Amendment. This officially ended slavery in all of the United States. We thank our ancestors for winning the fight for Black freedom!

IN CELEBRATION OF BLACK FATHERS:

Black fatherhood has always been a valued accomplishment within African societies. In ancient times, becoming a father was a key step in a man’s development.

Some of the oldest archetypes of Black fathers can be found in the ancient spiritual systems.

Shiva (also called ‘the black one’, ‘the one with matted hair’, ‘the great god’) is one of the first depictions of a father in ancient Indus Valley culture. Together with his wife Shakti, they created the universe.

Bes is another ancient god from Nubian/Kush*tic times. He is the husband of Bestet, the black cat goddess. Bes is a warrior, protector of women and children, protector of the household, and a jokester!

So today as we celebrate Black fatherhood, we praise those Black men that have taken that important step in life. Black fathers are an important part of the Black family unit, and we appreciate them. Happy Father’s Day!

🌟Did you know? Memorial Day was originally a Black holiday called “Decoration Day”.

It was a celebration to thank the Black Union soldiers who’d fought and given their lives in the Civil War.

The first Decoration Day was held in 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina. The Union army had just successfully defeated the Confederate army.

Black Union soldiers played a very large part in this victory.

On May 1, around 10,000 free Black people gathered in the historic Hampton Park to pay their respects to the fallen Black Union soldiers. Hampton Park was formerly the site of a prison (built by white Confederates) which had confined many Black Union soldiers overtime.

To honor their fallen lives, free Black workmen had decided to convert the prison into a memorial site. This is where the first Decoration Day was held.

The celebration itself consisted of a large parade, fiery speeches, picnics, and even demonstrations by some of the surviving Black Union soldiers.

The whole event was a happy and fun gathering of Black people who were celebrating their victory over white enslavement.

Celebrations like this one continued to be held by Black people all over the United States.

Over the years, Decoration Day was copied by whites. They changed the date to the end of May, and renamed it “Memorial day”. The meaning was whitewashed to be a celebration for “all soldiers” who fought in the war.

But this was NOT the original meaning. Now you know!

🌟The history of Africa Day is one which all Black people should know. It marks a significant point in global Black history that affects us to this day…

🌟Africa Day was originally called ‘Africa Freedom Day’ and was founded on April 15th, 1958. In that year, Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana convened the First Conference of Independent States held in Accra, Ghana and attended by 8 Independent African States. These newly-free countries felt the desire to express unity with each other.

🌟So the conference was significant because it represented the first Pan-African conference to be held on African soil. History was made!

🌟Between 1958 and 1963, seventeen additional countries gained independence from European colonizers. Now, more than two-thirds of the continent had achieved independence!

🌟On May 25, 1963, leaders of thirty-two independent African states met to form the Organization of African Unity (OAU). At this meeting, Africa Freedom Day was renamed African Liberation Day and changed to May 25th, as it stands to this day.

🌟Today, African Libration Day or “Africa Day” is a holiday in many African countries and is celebrated by Black people all over the world, sometimes with public festivals. The celebration of Africa Day represents the global Pan-African movement and the unity and oneness of African people worldwide!
