Appalachian Backcountry Fly Fishing at its FINEST

MOUNTAIN BACKCOUNTRY FLY FISHING

Have you ever wanted to fish away from the crowd? Do you wonder what is at the top of the blue ridge that you see in the distance on your commute to and from work every day? Come with us into the middle of nowhere and into the middle of the laurel and rhododendron, to the cool clear headwaters streams that flow from the high altitudes of the Appalachian mountains in beautiful north Georgia. Our guides are highly experienced in fly fishing, bushcraft, and conservation. It is our mission here at Southern Hackle Outfitters to provide clients with an experience not offered anywhere else in the state. It is possible to catch larger, uglier, lazier, hatchery-born-and-raised trout in a creek next to a road while competing with two or three other anglers holding a can of corn and a stringer full of rainbows. That is not what you will receive from us. Whether are looking for a native southern Appalachian brook trout with red and yellow spots with blue halos and deep red fins with leading white stripes and a fiery orange underbelly or a buttery-golden brown trout with bright red spots or a shiny silver rainbow trout with a bright pink stripe down his side, peppery black spots, and rouge blush cheeks, then make no mistake, you will find them with us. If you want trout who have never seen a person, much less a fly, who are waiting to pounce on your bushy size 16 yellow humpy and then run at top speed under a log jam and put a bend in your slow action fly rod, we are your perfect match. We do not fish for ugly fish, and we do not fish in ugly places.

We are proud to be one of the few outfitters who target this elaborately colored, rarely caught species. The southern Appalachian brook trout is the ONLY species of trout native to Georgia. They were displaced here by the last ice age, and are only found in extremely remote areas. Though they are the smallest species we target (avg. 4-6”), we have spent decades searching for their habitat. They are the Holy Grail of Appalachian fly fishing. Though small, they are always willing to eat your dry fly. Once hooked, these fish will sprint toward the nearest cover they can find, putting a bend in even a 4-weight fly rod. They are hidden, and they are spooky, but we will take you to them and help you cross them off your bucket list. Warning: you will become addicted to their beauty.

These aren’t the stockers you have caught your whole life. Their great-great-great-great-great-(you get the point)-grandparents were raised in a hatchery and somehow made the spawning run up to the top of the mountain. This is the second-largest (avg. 8-12”) hardest-fighting fish that we target. On the rods we use, they will feel much larger than they area. We have had plenty of them break us off on 5x tippet. They are extremely aggressive and will eat nearly anything you drop in the water in front of them, and they aren’t quite as spooky as brook trout. They are an excellent option for the new angler or someone who just wants to stay busy fighting and releasing fish the entire day.
