Long before anybody had a weather app, mountain folks read the winter off a caterpillar. 🐛 The woolly worm has thirteen segments, one for each week of winter, and the old rule says the more black on it the harder those weeks are going to be.

Banner Elk, North Carolina takes this seriously enough to have held the Woolly Worm Festival every October since 1978. They race the caterpillars up strings, and the winning worm is the official forecaster for the year. There is a person whose job it is to read it and announce the winter.

And the folklore does not stop there. Thick corn husks, squirrels burying early, a foggy August morning meaning a snow in winter, hornets building nests high. Some of it is nonsense. Some of it is generations of people paying very close attention to a place, which is its own kind of data. 🍂
