Not every day as an Airbnb owner is sunshine and rainbows. This week was particularly challenging: guests arriving to a cloudy pool, lost remote to the movie room, hot tub malfunction, AC unit not cooling, internet connection issues…It seems like nothing is going quite right. It’s frustrating fielding phone call after phone call, coordinating pool cleaners and electricians and maintenance and HVAC. And then I remember, I’m doing it all from the ballpark in Omaha while getting to spend time with my family and watch our boy play ball. And then I am reminded just how blessed I am to get to call this “work.”

Today, I was asked to write down some of my favorite childhood memories. The majority of them were associated with family vacations: trying to cross the rock path to the other side of the campground without falling in the icy water at Albert Pike, riding our bikes up the hill to the little store to get pushup pops, feeling so fancy drinking virgin daiquiris on the beach at Gulf Shores, sweating it out in the summer heat shoulder-to-shoulder on Main Street USA on one of our many trips to DisneyWorld. We won’t mention the 2nd degree burns I thought were totally normal following every lake/beach trip. 🥵

One thing Clay and I unequivocally agree on is making memories over collecting “stuff.” We’ve tried to give our kids those core memories to look back on the summers we’ve spent together with the same warmth we have when we remember our childhood trips.

Maybe that’s why we love being short-term rental owners. We love to think we’ve had a small part in creating spaces that will be a part of some family’s special childhood memories.
