Skyline Drive in Cañon City, Colorado.
Skyline Drive is a narrow, one-way scenic road that runs along a razorback ridge just west of Cañon City. Built in 1905 by prisoners from the nearby Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility, it is famous for its steep drop-offs on both sides and sweeping views of the Arkansas River Valley and surrounding Front Range foothills. The drive is especially dramatic at sunrise and sunset, when the limestone ridgeline glows and the landscape stretches out for miles below.

It's hard to believe camping season is right around the corner.

We're excited to welcome back returning guests, and also meet new campers.

As most everyone is aware, it is looking to be an extremely dry summer. Colorado is likely facing extreme drought conditions. This means there is a very good chance most or all of Colorado will be implementing very restrictive fire regulations. We regularly monitor both current conditions as well as any mandated restrictions and try to keep all current and upcoming guests updated with this information.

Currently, there is a very good chance the summer will see extreme restrictions on camp fires. Many times a propane fire pit is allowed during these times. Just something to consider during your planning stages. We do have two propane fire pits available for rent if you are interested.

And again, we try to update guests, via their HipCamp booking, of both upcoming weather and fire restriction forecasts .

And that's a wrap folks! Just like that, the 2025 season at Camp Penguin has come to an end.

A huge Thank You to all of our wonderful guests who took the time from their busy schedules to come hang out here.

Although it's still Fall, we can feel Winter just around the corner. Hoping everyone has an excellent end to 2025.

We had an incredible season and look forward to seeing many of you again in 2026.

The trees are changing. Fall is officially just around the corner. Winter will be here before you know it. Get out. Enjoy all the beauty that Colorado has to offer!

First snow of the season expected in the San Juans in southwest Colorado tonight and Friday night. A dusting of snow also possible across the peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in New Mexico.

On September 9, 2025, the Epsilon Perseid Meteor Shower reaches its peak activity. ✨

🕛 Best Time to Watch:
From 00:00 (midnight) to 04:00 local time — when the sky is darkest and the meteors are most active.

🌌 What to Expect:
• Up to 20 meteors per hour.
• Bright, fast streaks across the sky, many with glowing trails.
• Best visible when looking northeast, toward the Perseus constellation.

🔭 Viewing Tips:
• Go far from city lights for the clearest view.
• Give your eyes about 20 minutes to adjust to darkness.
• No telescope needed — just look up and enjoy!

Some states that are usually too far south to see the northern lights may get a chance to experience them Tuesday night.

AURORA UPDATE: Forecasting the northern lights is an exceptionally difficult endeavor. As such, you will often find forecasts ultimately being less-than-perfect with regard to timing and magnitude. It's just the nature of the beast.

Our best guess is a G2-G3 storm developing Monday night. It could arrive sooner. It could arrive later, putting Tuesday night into play. While NOAA has a G3 Watch in effect, they mention a possibility of this escalating to G4 potential should ingredients align just right.

The map below offers a general guideline of naked eye & photographic visibility potential during a G4 storm. All events are unique, so this is a loose map for reference. Remember, the most likely outcome peaks at G3. This would be a best-case scenario.
