The purpose of this Mother’s Day Run is to raise money to help fund education addiction awareness programs or materials for our kids. In 2016, all of the profits/contributions ($10,000+) went to Healthy Chelmsford an organization overseen by the Board of Health. The money was used to bring in speakers for 8th, 9th ad 10th grade student about Substance Use, as well as to support the Candlelight Vigil, which is held each year in memory of those who lost the battle with Substance Use. Again this year, all of the profits and contributions will be used to help educate our local kids about the dangers associated with opioids and other substances. Our Experience:
For the organizers, Nancy and Don Patch, the idea of a Mother's Day run began several years ago when Nancy and 5 girlfriends ran together on Mother's Day morning to support one of the friends who was going through a sad time. This unconventional start to Mother’s Day touched us deeply and caused us to think about the day a bit differently. Beginning Mothers Day with a group of friends, and getting a bit of exercise, only made the day more special. A few years later Nancy organized her own own unconventional start to Mothers Day from our home, with a “fun run” followed by a festive brunch. During the next six years the run/walk grew each year and evolved into a celebration of life, friendship, and especially, motherhood. We saw the opportunity to build on our experience, to share our Mother’s Day celebration with more friends, and soon to be friends, and raise both awareness and money for this important cause. In 2016, there were 359 old and new friends who participated in the event. We have already received lots of local support in preparing for this year's event:
Key to the organizers (Nancy and Don) is that you can be confident that the funds raised will be independently controlled and will go to the designated purpose. This year we are partnering with the Chelmsford Elks, who will manage the money for the race. Why the Elks Lodge? Because the Elks have been involved in Drug Awareness for decades and partner with the DEA specifically on Opioid Education. At the National and State levels, the Elks have their own drug awareness programs, and we will leverage parts of their program to support our efforts to again educate our local kids about opioids.
