LINKING FRIENDSHIP CEREMONY
This simple ceremony is based on the Dutch Girl Guide's Benediction, "I am a link in the golden chain of Girl Scouting (or world friendship), and I must keep my link strong and bright." Note: nice for a bridging activity.
Supplies: a paper strip with tape on one end or a piece of rope for each participant
Set-up: participants stand or sit in a circle, each with their own chain "link."
Procedure: The leader can begin the ceremony by taping together her paper link or, if using rope, tying it with a square knot and repeating the benediction. Each participant takes a turn to add a link and recite a thought on friendship. When the circle is completed, it would be appropriate to sing a friendship or international song.
Note: if done as part of a bridging activity, make paper links of a different color for each level; have each participant put their name on the link; alternate colors around the circle. The visiting group could take home the chain as a reminder of the visit.
