Colorado Springs friends 👀

Did you know the European Cafe just re-opened in downtown Colorado Springs? They moved from their location in Old Colorado City. The owner, Bozena Jakubczyk, moved here 30 years ago from Poland and hand makes their pierogi, stroganoff and other German and Austrian comfort food in a cozy, welcoming atmosphere.

We loved their seasonal peach crepes with a delicious cream cheese filling. The stroganoff and pierogi 🥟 were also terrific, along with the fried tomatoes with eggs and home fries. Recommend!

Does anyone else love going to your local monthly ArtWalk? We used to live on Amelia Island when we were stationed at Kings Bay, Georgia, and we loved attending their ArtWalk. It became a favorite date night - we'd walk, see new art, enjoy refreshments from galleries, see people we knew in downtown Fernandina Beach and just enjoy our little town.

Now we have an ArtWalk every First Friday of the month here in Old Colorado City or Downtown Colorado Springs from 5 to 8pm.

This past Friday we checked out two new-to-us spots on the downtown ArtWalk. The Cottonwood Center for the Arts is a HUGE art space featuring a wide variety of talented artists, diverse exhibits, and art classes, including pottery and painting. The atmosphere is welcoming, making it a great place to explore, and several artists were hosting open studios, inviting everyone to check out their art. I found a couple pieces from local artist Stephanie Moon of the Manitou Incline and Crested Butte.

🐻 We have seen more bears in Colorado than we ever have before! Yesterday, while we were walking on a quiet street in Ouray, we saw a bear in a yard. It stood motionless, like a cute bear statue on all fours, at the side of a home, about thirty feet from where we were walking. Our daughter noticed it and exclaimed "oh, a bear statue!" And then, the bear moved!! We all were frozen for a moment. I wasn't quick enough to get a video, but I snagged a quick picture before we moved quickly away and the bear took off behind the house. I think we were all shocked to see each other! 📸 See picture below of the bear we saw before we all went our separate ways.

Ouray (pronounced yer-ray) is a beautiful wild mountain town with gorgeous views and fun shops. 🏔️

Fun fact: Did you know that the town of Ouray, Colorado, got its name from Chief Ouray, a famous and respected leader of the Ute tribe? Chief Ouray was a smart leader and diplomat who worked hard to keep peace between white settlers and the Ute people. His personal name translates to "arrow" in the Ute language Ouray was founded by miners in 1875, the town was originally called Uncompahgre (meaning "hot water springs") before it was officially incorporated and renamed in honor of the chief in 1876.

I came up with a tourist ice cream hack when your family is visiting little towns like Telluride and Ouray... When you're walking downtown, instead of buying expensive single serve ice creams for everyone, find the local grocery store, buy a four pack of something you all agree on (team building exercise! 😆)and enjoy! A box of six ice cream sandwiches might cost you $8 instead of several individual small $5 dollar ice creams. And you're supporting the local grocery store! ... Or support the local ice cream store 🍨 whatever floats your boat...

Have you driven through western Colorado? We're taking our first RV road trip from Colorado Springs over to Mesa Verde and on through Telluride, Ouray and Ridgway. We're staying at State parks as we go. It's been a lovely trip full of views that remind us of Switzerland, blue lakes and friendly locals.

Has anyone been through Montrose? We'll head that way tomorrow and go back to Colorado Springs.

This morning we hiked to the lower blue lake via the Blue Lakes Trail. It's only a 40 minute drive to the trailhead from Ridgway State Park. We recommend getting there early (sunrise or before!) for parking, pack lots of water and snacks. If you hike to all three lakes it's about 9 miles round-trip. The juice was worth the squeeze! 🏔️
