According to a 2026 study, it became the first tropical country to reverse deforestation, transforming decades of forest loss into a remarkable recovery. Today, nearly 60% of the country is covered by forest, a dramatic rebound from the 1980s.

It’s an incredible reminder that forests can recover when they’re protected, and that long-term conservation efforts really can make a lasting difference.
