Lake Vermilion sits in northern Minnesota's St. Louis County as one of the most breathtaking and most genuinely extraordinary lakes in a state that has no shortage of extraordinary lakes. It covers nearly 40,000 acres and contains 365 islands, one for every day of the year according to the local count that Minnesotans repeat with the specific satisfaction of a fact that sounds too good to be true and happens to be accurate. The shoreline stretches over 1,200 miles of bays, peninsulas, and island edges that create a water environment so varied and so complex that people spend entire summers exploring it without covering the same water twice.

The clarity of Lake Vermilion is what stops people when they first see it. The water runs deep blue in open areas and shifts to green over the shallower rocky bays in color transitions that photographers travel specifically to capture and that no photograph ever fully reproduces because the eye adjusts to the colors in person in ways that the camera cannot replicate. The ancient Precambrian bedrock that defines the lake's basin is among the oldest exposed geology in North America and the landscape it created has a permanence and a dramatic quality that sets Vermilion apart from the softer glacial lake topography found across much of Minnesota.

Fishing on Lake Vermilion is world class in every category that matters to serious anglers. Walleye, muskellunge, smallmouth bass, and northern pike inhabit waters that have been drawing dedicated anglers from across the country for generations. The muskie fishing specifically has developed a devoted following that treats Lake Vermilion as a destination in its own right rather than simply a northern Minnesota lake.

Lake Vermilion State Park brought formal protection to a portion of the lake's shoreline in 2010, Minnesota's first new state park in decades, a recognition that what existed on those shores deserved the same protected status that previous generations had wisely extended to other extraordinary Minnesota places. Standing on the rocky shoreline of Lake Vermilion at the end of a summer day when the light goes gold across 365 islands and the loons start calling and the water holds the last colors of the evening is one of those Minnesota experiences that permanently changes what a person believes a lake is capable of being.
