In Michigan, the 1.7 billion year old rocks you’ll find at Black Rocks in Presque Isle Park make for one of the most beautiful areas anywhere on Lake Superior! Located in Marquette’s Upper Peninsula, this rugged stretch of shoreline is a favorite place to explore, swim, and take in wide-open lake views. The dark cliffs are made mostly of basalt, an igneous rock formed when ancient lava cooled, giving Black Rocks its unmistakable look. Paths wind through the park and lead toward rocky overlooks, pebble beaches, and the small cove where many visitors gather on warm summer days. A long ledge reaches out above the clear, cold water, and it has become a well-known spot for people who want to leap into Lake Superior below. Others simply sit on the sun-warmed rocks, watch the waves roll in, or relax near the shore while swimmers climb back up for another jump. Presque Isle itself means “almost an island,” a fitting name for the forested peninsula that stretches into the lake. With its ancient stone, blue water, and beautiful shoreline, Black Rocks is one of the Upper Peninsula’s most incredible places to spend time on the water during the summer here in MI!
