Sometimes the best walls aren’t walls at all.

Big progress today on the Long Drive Walk-Out project. This custom wood slat wall is in along the staircase, creating separation while still allowing light and sightlines to move through the space.

I love the contrast of the warm wood against the crisp white walls and black handrail—and the way something that started as a practical solution has become one of the strongest architectural details in the basement.

There’s something especially satisfying about watching an idea that existed on paper actually take shape, one slat at a time.

And a big shout-out to Ethan Robert Goodman with Good Wood Works for the craftsmanship and patience required to make all those lines behave. 😊 Exceptional work (with a few more projects still in flight!)

The first photo is where we are today. The second is directionally where we’re headed.

Right now, it’s a very pale construction zone—with unfinished floors, cabinetry waiting for its final details and a room still searching for its personality. But the bones are in place, and the vision is becoming much easier to see.

The goal is a lower-level living space that feels warm, layered and collected—not like a basement and definitely not like a showroom. We’ll add rich wood tones, a full slatted stair wall, custom floating shelves, a large textured rug, warm leather, comfortable swivel chairs and a few black accents to give all that softness some backbone.

We also hope to incorporate a beautiful piece of Japanese paper art from my aunt’s collection—bringing something personal, meaningful and entirely one-of-a-kind into the room.

The fireplace will anchor the space, while the table near the windows creates a second place to gather, work, play a game or share a meal. And yes, there will be plants. Obviously. 🌿

Still plenty to do—but this is the fun stage, when a room begins making the leap from floor plan to feeling.

A lower-level bedroom doesn’t have to feel like a basement.

This is where the room stands today—freshly painted, still waiting on flooring, and featuring the ever-glamorous construction ladder. But that large egress window gave us the starting point for something light, warm and unexpectedly beautiful.

The direction is soft and Scandinavian: warm natural wood, layered neutrals, generous curtains, comfortable textures and a custom nine-foot floating shelf above the bed. Rather than fighting the window, we’re designing the entire room to celebrate the natural light it brings in.

And we have plans for the egress window well itself—because even a view that begins below ground can become something beautiful. That part will come later.

For now, swipe to see where this blank room is headed. This is the part of design I love: seeing what’s possible long before the ladder leaves.

The bathroom is starting to look like a bathroom. 😊

Tile is going up in the walk out remodel, and this is one of those stages where I can finally see the original vision beginning to emerge.

The foundation is intentionally pretty quiet: warm neutral floor tile, crisp vertical white tile in the shower, and Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist on the walls. From there, we’ll bring the warmth back in with the wood vanity, oversized black-framed mirror, black fixtures and lighting, and that beautiful old wood lattice piece I’ve been hanging onto.

We made one design change along the way and decided to carry the white shower tile out as the vanity backsplash. I think that little bit of repetition will make the whole room feel more intentional without turning it into a sea of white tile.

And because I apparently cannot leave well enough alone, I’ve already started playing with the finishing layers — a vintage-inspired washable rug, possibly a little sheepskin at the vanity, and a few collected pieces rather than a lot of bathroom “decor.”

The last photo is our current rendering of where we think it’s all going to land. Not every detail will be exact, but it captures the feeling I’m after: warm, collected, a little European, and comfortable enough that it doesn’t feel like a brand-new basement bathroom.

Still plenty to do, but this one is getting fun. ❤️

More progress!

This week brought a few exciting milestones in the basement remodel:

• The fireplace stone is up—and I couldn't be happier with how it looks. I love the texture and the way it will become the focal point of the living space.

• The floor tile is now in throughout the bathroom, laundry/closet, and multipurpose room.

• And the cabinets have officially arrived!

The garage has become the project's "green room"—serving as the staging area for cabinets, flooring, lighting, and just about everything else waiting for its turn to make an appearance.

It's still very much a construction zone, but it's starting to feel like spaces instead of just rooms. Looking forward to seeing it all come together over the next few weeks - and then to decorate!

Behind the Build

Every stage tells part of the story—from the first sketches and floor plans to framing, drywall, and eventually the details that make a house feel like home - and this one is especially fun.

This walk-out level is beginning to reveal exactly what we envisioned. For the first time, the sight lines are coming into focus, and I’m especially excited about the natural light. Even before paint, flooring, cabinetry, and furnishings, you can already see how light from the windows, the sliding doors, and even the main level will brighten the space and make it feel open and connected.

I’ve included the floor plan and my inspiration board in my next post so you can begin to imagine it alongside me.

One of the greatest joys of this work is helping people see the potential in a space long before it’s finished. I’d love to know—can you picture the completed space now, or do you need to see it all come together first?

Progress update!

This may be my favorite part of the basement remodel so far.

We discovered the basement had actually been framed for a sliding glass door from the very beginning. For whatever reason, it was never installed—the opening was bricked in and finished with a window instead.

This week we brought that original vision to life.

The extra light and direct access to the patio completely change how this lower level lives. It no longer feels like a basement—it feels like another floor of the home.

Looking forward to showing you what the back patio area will look like eventually, but for now we’re just happy with the light. ☀️

My little house finch babies are growing so fast that they seem to change by the hour.

Current stage: tiny dinosaurs with mohawks.😄

The first photo is tonight’s actual nest check. The second is a fun pencil-sketch rendering of the same scene.

A week ago they were tiny, nearly featherless hatchlings. Now their eyes are open, they’re stretching their necks high above the nest, and their first wing feathers are beginning to emerge. In another week or so, these awkward little fluff balls will start looking like real birds.

There are four babies in the nest, and all seem healthy, active, and very interested in being fed whenever Mom or Dad arrives.

It’s been a joy watching them grow up right outside my door.
