Impactful ways to help the Ely community!

As devastating wildfires and dangerous air quality continue to impact Ely, surrounding Wilderness communities, and the Boundary Waters, many people are asking how they can help. Here are a few ways you can support during this difficult time:

Ely Community Response is connecting resources and local organizations to provide on-the-ground support to the community. With a base open daily from the Ely State Theater, the team has many recommendations for meaningful ways you can help:

Donate to local nonprofits
Many local nonprofits provide essential services, preserve the area’s natural resources, support arts and education, or serve residents of all ages. Financial contributions can help them continue their work during a challenging season. Organizations to consider include:

- Ely Community Resource: Youth programs, community education, outdoor experiences, can help local families in transition or crisis: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/88DP4CE8JHWG4?nvep=&hmac=&emci=94331183-2f81-f111-b337-000d3a1558ce&emdi=ea000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000001&ceid=
- Ely Area Food Shelf: Support the Ely Area Food Shelf to help alleviate hunger for residents: https://elyareafoodshelf.org/march-2026-campaign/
- Northwoods Partners: Support community elders and their caregivers in the Ely area: https://www.northwoodspartners.org/give
- Contented Critters: Send donations to help support food donations, pet boarding, air filters for the facility, and more! https://www.contentedcrittersmn.org/donate

Support local businesses

Many Ely businesses rely heavily on summer tourism. Outfitters, restaurants, lodging providers, retailers, guides, artists, and other small businesses may experience significant financial impacts from fire-related closures, smoke conditions, or canceled travel plans.

If you’re able to help, consider:

- Purchasing gift cards to use later.
- Shopping online from local stores.
- Booking a future stay or guided trip.
- Not asking for a refund for existing trips.
- Ordering products from Ely businesses.
- Sharing your favorite local businesses on social media.
- Visiting when conditions improve.

Wilderness-edge communities are resilient and rely on people power to thrive. By supporting local organizations and businesses, we can help ensure they’ll continue to serve residents and welcome visitors for years to come.

As both the owner of Ely Camp Haus and someone who was born and raised in Ely, I’ve been thinking a lot about the difficult position so many people are in right now.

I understand the concerns of visitors who have vacations planned and aren’t sure what to do. Family trips are often planned months in advance, and it’s disappointing to face uncertainty after investing time, money, and excitement into a getaway.

I also see the reality facing our local community. Many Ely businesses rely heavily on the summer season, particularly late July and early August. For lodging owners, restaurants, outfitters, shops, and other small businesses, these few weeks often help sustain operations through the slower months of the year.

One thing I’ve learned over the past week is how quickly conditions can change. Air quality has varied from day to day depending on weather and wind patterns, making it difficult for anyone to predict exactly what things will look like a week from now.

Most importantly, my heart is with everyone affected by these fires—residents, firefighters, business owners, visitors, and families whose plans have been disrupted. This situation is impacting people in many different ways, and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer.

If you’ve planned a trip to Ely in the coming weeks, continue monitoring updates daily and make the decision that feels right for your family. Try to be flexible until the actual date of your arrival as things can change quickly. If conditions allow and you’re comfortable visiting, supporting local businesses is one of the most meaningful ways to help our community during a challenging time.

For now, I’m choosing grace, patience, and compassion for everyone navigating circumstances beyond their control. ❤️

With love,
Emma Larson

You’re not a Minnesotan unless you’ve eaten here.

Minnesota’s favorite diner is open for the season. It’s a tradition to stop for a burger on your way up north from the cities.

We just had a last-minute opening at Camp Haus in Ely for March 20–22, and it lines up with the 2026 Ely Dark Sky Festival.

If you’ve been looking for a reason to get up north, this is a good one.

Here are a few events happening this weekend:

• Telescope viewing + guided stargazing
• Night sky photography class at the Ely Folk School
• Astronomy talks and workshops
• Night hikes + astrophotography
• Events centered around the spring equinox (Friday)

Ely is one of the darkest sky areas in the country, so if the weather cooperates, the stargazing & northern lights viewing is unreal.

If you’ve been needing a quiet weekend away, this is a really good one to grab.

Booking link is in bio. Save this for later or send to someone you’d go with.

Vote for your favorite sculpture! A fun way to participate in the event, even if you aren’t in Ely right now.
