Choosing the right location 👆can make a huge difference when it comes to seeing the aurora.

Did you know? Exit Glacier wasn't named because it's disappearing—it was named by mountaineers!

In 1968, a team completed the first recorded crossing of the Harding Icefield. After spending days crossing the vast icefield, they descended this glacier to reach the road. It became their exit, and the name has remained ever since.

Today, Exit Glacier is the only glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park you can reach by road, making it one of the park's most popular attractions. Several maintained trails lead to viewpoints, and the Harding Icefield Trail rewards hikers with spectacular views over one of the largest icefields entirely within the United States.

It's also one of the best places in Alaska to see the effects of glacier retreat, with signs marking where the glacier reached in previous decades.

Have you visited Exit Glacier—or is it on your Alaska bucket list?

• The best winter activities
• Where to stay
• How to get there
• Practical planning tips

We've explored Denali in winter ourselves and share everything you need to know before deciding if a winter visit is right for you.

Did you know? Alaska has the largest population of bald eagles in the United States.

With abundant coastlines, rivers, lakes, and salmon, Alaska provides incredible habitat for these impressive birds. Bald eagles are especially abundant along the coast and on the islands of Southeast Alaska, where the state’s highest nesting densities occur.

And they are BIG! Bald eagles can have a wingspan of up to 7.5 feet and weigh as much as 14 pounds, with females typically larger than males.

Fish are their main food, but bald eagles are opportunistic. They also eat waterfowl, small mammals, crabs, clams, and carrion.

We've been lucky to see bald eagles in many places across Alaska, but watching them near the water and salmon streams is always special.

Where have you had your most memorable bald eagle sighting in Alaska?
