In 2013 we decided to become part of the Fayetteville community.

Before Airbnb was a thing, before the national park designation, before folks started flocking here by the millions.

We weren’t climbers, paddlers or moneyed developers.

We were hikers, explorers and art appreciators with a fierce love of our home, West Virginia.

We took a chance, followed our dream and dove headfirst into entrepreneurship as a way to express that love.

It has proven to be one of the best decisions we ever made.

Happy anniversary to us. ❤️ Thank you all for 12 wonderful years!

We spent yesterday wandering the Stonecliff Trail in New River Gorge National Park, where the forest floor is waking up in a quiet riot of wildflowers.

Spring ephemeral were everywhere, drawing in butterflies and bees with their pretty little blooms.

Down alongside the New River, everything felt alive in that early-season way… fresh, bright, and just beginning.

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to get outside, this is it!

Season is starting in the New River Gorge. When will you come?

April: Pop up with the dandelions.
May: Bloom with the Catawba rhododendron.
June: Nestle into these hills.
July: Forage for summer mushrooms.
August: Fly in with the monarchs.
September: Turn golden.
October: Be bold.

What a beautifully quiet day on the Endless Wall Trail. We saw some climbers and marveled at the ladders they use to get in place. Too scary for us! 😬

The New River Gorge is coming back to life and we can’t get enough!

1️⃣ Check out the incredible sporulation of this scarlet elf cup mushroom!

2️⃣ Is there anything more satisfying than a sycamore ball sqeeze?

3️⃣ The edges of this seersucker sedge reminded us of the mnemonic naturalists use to tell sedges, rushes and grasses apart. 😂

4️⃣ Look at all these putty root orchids!

5️⃣ Listen to the sweet pneets of the woodcock AKA timberdoodle.

6️⃣ We think buckeye tree buds and leaves are so unusual. Don’t you?

We had to jump on this one! ❤️

The forest is coming back to life, so we figured we should too.

We took a much-needed social media break in February, but this first week of March has been so full of exciting forest finds that we had to share them with you!

Finding a timberdoodle (AKA American Woodcock) was a highlight. We didn’t get to see his famous dance moves or even hear his little nasal “peents,” but simply finding him was thrilling enough.

We also staked out two vernal pools and saw hundreds of salamanders while listening to the sweet song of spring peepers (AKA Pseudacris crucifer).

Last but not least, we helped the WV Land Trust install tree-friendly labels throughout a soon-to-be-revealed learning loop in a small preserve in Charleston. It was Shawn’s brainchild that he’s put a lot of work into.

We hope our early Appalachian spring pics and posts provide you some peace and pleasure. And keep in mind that we have a wonderful place to stay in Fayetteville should you choose to get away to New River Gorge National Park. ⭐️ Gold star to anyone who can ID the tree bloom in the 6th photo.

Here’s something you may not know: Before Fayetteville WV Creates was called Fayetteville Creates, we simply called it Ripple, the name of the West Virginia Creative Network’s statewide program from which this idea first grew.

Ripple was created to fund art projects in West Virginia towns that would send creativity outward, touching a community in ways both big and small. What we didn’t realize at the time was just how far those ripples would travel here in Fayetteville.

Once the idea of a town-wide creative residency took shape, and a small but mighty group of local volunteers gathered around it, the momentum felt almost magical. The ripples kept widening.

With the generosity of local vacation rental owners, we welcomed seven creatives into our town. In return, they offered seven thoughtful, fascinating workshops, all free and open to everyone in the community.

We met weekly at our favorite local spots, shared conversations over drinks and coffee, and celebrated with a joyful pizza party at the end. But the true heart of Fayetteville Creates lived in all the moments in between.

The quiet kindnesses between friends old and new, the spontaneous gatherings, the shared meals, the unexpected collaborations like these:

🥾 Andrea St. Amand took the creatives exploring through the Gorge.

🧩 Eric Pories of Escape-A-Torium gifted them an adventure to bond and laugh together.

🍝 Mary Ann Roberts opened her home and her kitchen, serving a homemade lasagna.

🎨 Meredith Gregg welcomed Melia, a visiting painter, into her studio.

💙 Carl, our local stained glass guru, guided each creative in making their own suncatcher.

🎶 Many of our great local musicians like Ryan Brandenburg, Dina Hornbaker, Brian Dennis, Duncan Mapes and Zac Shelton jammed at Fayetteville Creates events.

🖼️ Sarah Goodyear hosted weekly meetups in her studio, giving everyone a place to gather.

🧵 Local businesses like Lost Appalachia and Southside became impromptu stages for book signings, live music, and art demos, including the evening Amy Pabst brought her sewing machine into the pub and quilted among friends.

So much work went into Fayetteville Creates. But what we’ll remember most is the feeling, the happiness that seemed to hum through town for those weeks.

We’re incredibly honored to have been part of it, and sad to see January come to an end. ❤️ We hope you all had as much fun as we did.
