The Hell Divers
by Kari Dequine Harden, Gambit New Orleans

Started in 1963 by a dozen Metairie mailmen with a passion for spearfishing, the Hell Divers Spearfishing Club (www.helldivers.org) is one of the oldest in the nation. The club limits its membership to 33, and membership requirements include being "proficient divers, the ability to stay out of trouble, helpful on the dive trip, and disp

lay a commitment to the club." The Hell Divers' mission is to build knowledge about diving by using it for sports and scientific exploration to determine safe depth limits for divers and to help preserve sea life habitats, and to increase interest in the sport through education programs. The Hell Divers meet twice a month, go on regular dive trips in the Gulf of Mexico and other locales, and compete in an annual rodeo for the largest amberjack, barracuda, cobia, grouper and red snapper, among other fish. The inaugural rodeo was held at the Lake Pontchartrain lakefront in 1963 and had a competition for sheepshead. Today, sportsmen come from across the nation to compete in the rodeo, which celebrated its 50th anniversary June 2 with a weigh-in and celebration at Kenner City Park. In addition to promoting and preserving the sports of diving and spearfishing, the club, along with the LCUDC, has partnered with the University of New Orleans, the University of Southern Mississippi and the National Ocean and Atmospheric Association to conduct research, including studies of the invasive lionfish and the tarpon.

Here are some photos from our 63rd annual HELLDIVERS RODEO . This year had an amazing turnout with over 65 divers participating in the rodeo as everyone knows Heldivers rodeo can be a blast, but also a wet / wild one considering the weather is always unpredictable this time of year. I’d like to thank everyone who came to participate in for anyone who couldn’t make it hopefully you can make it next year!

It’s that time of year once again! The Hell Divers Spearfishing Club would like to invite everyone to join us for our 63rd Annual Spearfishing Rodeo.

The Hell Divers organized our first rodeo in 1963 as a skin diving sheepshead competition in Lake Pontchartrain. Now, 63 years later we have one of the most anticipated tournaments of the season and one of the biggest in the country. There is a place for all divers, young and old, tank and breath hold, to compete for prizes and bragging rights. There are 12 fish species to make your mark with prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each and major awards of Club, Boat, Junior, Queen, Skin Diver, and the sought after King Spearfisherman.

The Hell Divers Rodeo will begin on May 27th and end with the weigh in party on May 30 Th . This year’s headquarters and weigh in will be at the Grand Isle Marina in Grand Isle , LA beginning at 4:00pm with food and refreshments for all entrants. There is plenty of parking for vehicles and boats, and it is also water accessible. The venue is family friendly so bring your whole crew to see the big fish coming in to be weighed and join in the party.

Your participation in the rodeo helps us to make donations to multiple causes including The Warren J. Mermilliod Scholarship Fund: This is the only scholarship at LSU in the Marine Biology Master’s Program.

We welcome everyone to join us for a great time. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me at 504-231-5592

I wish everyone the best of luck, and as always, dive hard, dive SAFE, and most of all have fun. We look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely, Frankie T….da Prez
