Yes, Louisiana has beaches, and Grand Isle has been drawing people to the Gulf for generations.

Sitting on a barrier island along Louisiana's coast, Grand Isle feels completely different from the cities, forests, and bayous found farther inland. Here, life has always revolved around the water.

Fishing is a huge part of the island's identity. Generations of commercial fishermen, shrimpers, recreational anglers, and charter captains have worked these waters. The community is also closely associated with the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo, a Louisiana fishing tradition dating to 1932.

But you don't have to hold a fishing rod to appreciate Grand Isle.

There are beaches to explore, incredible sunsets over the Gulf, migratory birds to watch, and that unmistakable feeling of being at the very edge of Louisiana.

Grand Isle State Park provides access to the area's coastal environment and gives visitors a close look at a barrier island ecosystem that plays an important role along Louisiana's shoreline.

Life here has never been easy. Hurricanes and coastal erosion have repeatedly battered Grand Isle, sometimes causing devastating destruction. Yet residents have rebuilt again and again.

That resilience has become part of the island's identity.

For many Louisiana families, Grand Isle isn't simply another vacation destination. It's where grandparents taught grandchildren to fish, where families spent summer weekends, and where memories were made around camps, boats, beaches, and seafood.

You can find bigger beaches elsewhere along the Gulf Coast.

But you won't find another Grand Isle.

This little strip of Louisiana carries an enormous amount of history, tradition, and coastal culture.

Grand Isle Redfish Rodeo

07/25/2026

Drive south as far as the road will take you and you will end up on Grand Isle, the only inhabited barrier island Louisiana has left. 🌊 It is a thin ribbon of sand and camps standing between the Gulf and the marshes behind it, a place that takes every storm head on and somehow keeps rebuilding, season after season.

Life out here runs on the water. 🎣 Shrimp boats work the passes, families fill their summers with fishing rodeos, and the island draws anglers chasing redfish and speckled trout along with birders who know it is a critical stopover for songbirds crossing the Gulf. The camps sit up on stilts for good reason, and everybody who lives there understands the deal they have made with the sea.

Grand Isle is fragile and stubborn all at once, the front line of a coast that is slowly slipping away. That is exactly what makes a summer down there feel so precious.
