Slavery and the Civil War
Joe Melita

With just 2 questions Joe had our attention.
Why was African slavery introduced into England's American colonies?
Then, how did slavery evolve into the total deprivation of all human rights and dignity?

With that, we were off on a journey that questions our history and explains it through the eyes of our own historian, Joe Melita.

Wednesday’s class was just the first of four. The next 3 Wednesday afternoons promise enlightenment on a subject we often put aside as something we think we already know.
Joe suggests that maybe we don’t.

Women and the United States Constitution –
Women’s Struggle for Equal Rights
With Charlie Sanders

October 10:
The discussion will focus on the treatment of women under common law in colonial America and adopted by most states in legislative form. These laws prevented married women from earning income in their own name, serving on juries, and denied them the right to vote.

October 17:
The discussion will explore the Supreme Court rulings. Focus will be on the Constitutional constraints Justices believed applicable at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

October 24:
This session opens with a SURPRISE you won't want to miss! Then
we will discuss the evolution of the Violence Against Women Act.

October 31: We will end this series with the Courts’ momentous decision in overturning Roe v. Wade and, in the area of religious freedom, the meaning of the free exercise clause of the 14th Amendment.
