One year ago Bhavika and David put real thought into what their guests would actually use. Not just what would photograph well, or what they’d seen other couples do.

They chose things that meant something to them - coffee and travel - and let that lead every decision.

I engraved glass coffee mugs and heat-foiled travel toiletry cases for their guests. People also started bringing me their luggage tags from the es**rt display and asking if I could add calligraphy to those too.

I love the unplanned moments that happen when guests realize they get to be a part of the experience and their gift is being personalized in front of them.

The best part? Guests were genuinely excited to find and pick up the pieces they picked because they felt thoughtful, personal, and actually useful.

Guests were excited to pick pieces that actually fit their lives and I have a feeling many of them are still being used a year later.

Not us scaling shelving in formalwear to get to the engraving station.

When my team and I arrived to set up, a different vendor’s station was set up in the only spot that would’ve made sense for our table.

Keeping things positive, we talked through alternate options with the planning team and helped create a solution that worked best for them and the guests, even though it was less convenient for us - engraving standing up inside the merch station.

The next challenge? The merch station had been set up too close to the wall, so we couldn’t squeeze through.

Not to mention, we were in floor-length dresses and the shelves weren’t made to hold our weight.

So we set up chairs on both sides of the shelving, hiked up our gowns, and made the climb.

Sometimes as an event professional, you have to stay flexible and easy going when unexpected things happen. That night, we got to be flexible both literally and figuratively!

Climbing over counters and onto chairs, we went to new heights for Krystal and Roy’s guests and none of them would have guessed that wasn’t the plan all along.

Added bonus: we had a lot of laughs and standing up made it easier to dance while engraving.

Sky High For Kids supports children and families facing pediatric cancer by funding research and providing meaningful support.

These journals were personalized as a thank you to the donors who make that work possible.

If you still think calligraphy is just for paper goods, this might change your mind.

Same foundational skill. New tools. New surfaces. Way more creative freedom.

It’s not just paper anymore. It’s a variety of unique surfaces including glass, leather, metal, wood… all turned into something personal.

Live or in studio, the personalization becomes part of the experience.

I pulled examples from just a few of the incredibly talented artists in the industry doing really creative things right now.

Some of the ideas I keep coming back to are:

- Out-of-the-box place cards that double as keepsakes.
- Full custom merch shops built into the guest experience.
- Multiple layers of thoughtful personalization.
- Story-driven gifting that really makes an impression.
- Precision engraving paired with luxury items.
- Custom perfume bars paired with Chanel compacts.
- Packaging that feels just as considered as what’s inside.
So many creative directions calligraphy and engraving can go and it’s only getting better.
