Milieu magazine

Milieu magazine MILIEU is a nationally distributed home and garden magazine that launched in September 2013.

In MILIEU, every story captures the look and feel, the mood and character, the style of a place – its milieu. The milieu that defines a great house or garden, the unique character of a design professional, the messages conveyed in a thoughtful essay about home life, the creative strategies for accomplishing the look you want for your home – these are the elements of our magazine. With a focus on t

he United States, but also going beyond to Europe and elsewhere, MILIEU introduces readers to the best designers and projects – the people and places that, until now, often have gone unnoticed. In shining an editorial light on diverse talent and interior and garden design, each issue of the quarterly magazine is dedicated to embracing the future and acknowledging the past, for what seems new today often has deep roots in the past. ✨NEW in MILIEU SUMMER 2026 Magazine✨

Before interior designer Jane Schwab and her husband Nelson, had even closed on their 1931 Georgian Revival residence outside Charleston, she was already on the phone with architect Jeremy Corkern because she trusted his sense of proportion and restraint.

Jane and Corkern agreed the existing floorboards needn’t be treated as precious; in fact, painting them became one of the home’s defining points. “Painted floors added an element of levity. We loved the way the point bounced the light around, brightening everything.”

✨NEW in MILIEU SUMMER 2026 Magazine✨

One of the first interior tasks interior designer Lori Anderson Weir and her senior design partner, Amanda Hauge, accomplished in this Hampton’s weekend home was to design a glazed divider separating the 2-story-high great room from the adjoining kitchen.

“We wanted to maintain sight lines from the great room all the way into the kitchen with the understanding that the house would be accommodating large family gatherings, especially at holidays.”

First Look! MILIEU SUMMER 2026 coming soon!

When I think about design, certain words come to mind: Craftsmanship. Artisan. One-of-a-kind. Visionary. The most original designers are those who honor their past influences, harness their own vision, and then realize a work of art—whether it be a completed home, a painting, an entire collection of products, or, as you will see in this issue, family recipes.

I believe in and embrace these ideals both as an interior designer and as the Founder & EIC of MILIEU, and I can sense when someone is doing something that no one else has done before. It is my honor to hand select these talented individuals through the lens of MILIEU to share their work with you.

This June in MILIEU—Travel to Sea Ranch Lodge, Cook with anana, Meet Forward Thinkers, Celebrate American Folk Art, Relax with homes on New York’s Long Island, by the banks of a Tennessee lake, on the island of Nantucket, outside of Charleston, and in the vast open landscape of Texas, and much more.

Please do SUBSCRIBE by June 30 for this issue to be mailed to you. Visit MILIEU-MAG.COM or call 855.521.0331.

Sincerely, Pam

In Spring 2020 we featured the country home of Houston designer Beverly Jacomini. In the story, Jacomini recalls, “When we first stepped inside, it was hard to tell what was what, because there were hay bales stacked to the ceiling, and Tommy and I could barely see any of the interior details. We had to climb around all that hay to get a sense of the place, but when we started moving the bales, I saw the stenciling—stenciled border patterns and hand-painted roses.”

From their Greenwich, Connecticut, studio, Justin Quinn and James Doyle regard every design project as an “intersection of nature and art.” They think of the designing of a landscape as akin to composing a painting—and to look at each of their finished projects is to see a living, breathing, flourishing, and ever-regenerating work of art.

Various grades of Spanish marbles are used throughout a London townhouse, including in this cloak/powder room, where a sink is made of black Marquina stone. Green velvet skirting, depicting mulberries, softens the room, which receives ample natural light from a tall narrow window.
