Geothermal drilling fluid technology is entering a new phase of development.

Newpark contributed to a paper presented at the recent 2026 AADE Fluids Technical Conference, exploring the evolution of water-based drilling fluids for Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) – and the challenges of designing fluids for increasingly extreme downhole environments.

The paper explores:

✅ EGS environments with reservoir temperatures above 350°C (660°F)

✅ The challenges of thermal degradation, gelation, fluid loss, and rheological stability

✅ The role of advanced synthetic polymers and nanomaterials

✅ Laboratory testing of enhanced high-temperature WBF formulations

✅ How oil and gas expertise is helping advance geothermal drilling

Newpark’s latest enhanced formulation demonstrated consistent performance in laboratory testing at 204°C (400°F) for up to 48 hours, supporting the continued development of solutions for hotter and more challenging geothermal applications.

Meet Salvatore Buononato, our Operations Manager for Albania!

As an operations manager, Salvatore's role focuses on coordinating operations, supporting field teams, and overseeing key projects within the Albania region. With 20 years of industry experience under his belt—15 of those being with Newpark—he has learned that real impact is made when people truly enjoy what they do.

When asked what he values most about working for Newpark, Salvatore had this to say:

"One of the things I value most about Newpark is the collaborative mindset. There's a genuine willingness to help each other succeed, and that creates an environment where you can deliver high-quality work while still enjoying the journey."

Outside of work, you can find Salvatore spending most of his time with his family and playing a variety of sports to stay active.

Extreme heat, severe fluid losses, and complex volcanic geology can make geothermal drilling particularly demanding.

For a project in the Azores, Newpark deployed TerraTherm™, our high-performance water-based drilling fluid, alongside a tailored fluid management strategy to maintain performance in temperatures reaching 250°C (482°F) and manage significant downhole losses.

As a result, average drilling time was reduced from 30 days to 24 days – delivering wells 20% sooner than planned.

Overall project highlights include:

♦️ Performance maintained at temperatures up to 250°C (482°F)

♦️ Average downhole losses of 1,254 m³ (44,285 ft³) per well successfully managed

♦️ Fluid formulation continuously optimized as well conditions changed

♦️ Average drilling time reduced by six days
