Daily Elk Fire Update: Aug 24, 2026-Since there has been no change in fire status or activity in over a week, this will be the last daily update unless there is a change in fire activity or fire status.

Current Situation: Yesterday, afternoon thunderstorms formed over higher terrain and moved east across the fire area. The fire area overall received minimal rainfall, with the northwest side of the fire receiving the most. The increased humidity helped moderate fire behavior. Heavy fuels smoldered and crept, while smaller fuels remained largely unreceptive.

The division on the northeast side of the fire has been re-designated as Division B to ensure clear separation of communications from the Gold Mountain Fire. Firefighters working in Division B are continuing work in High Bridge Gulch. They are concentrating on locating and extinguishing remaining pockets of heat. Crews are also utilizing unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) to help identify where heat persists. Smoke has been present in the deep interior of Independence Gulch.

Crews in Division G on the southeast side of the fire found only minimal heat along the handline leading into the dozer line. Today crews will continue to secure the fireline by removing vegetation and building additional depth to ensure fire does not cross the line. Firefighters are also scouting additional locations that could be suitable for future indirect line placement.

Weather and Fire Behavior: Todayโ€™s weather will be similar to recent days but with lower wetting potential. Afternoon thunderstorms are expected to develop over higher terrain on the south end of the fire and move from west to east. Heavy fuels will continue to creep and smolder and light smoke may be visible. Weather conditions will be closely observed to ensure the safety and wellโ€‘being of all firefighters working on the incident.

Today's Elk Fire Update: NO CHANGE! :-)

Current Situation: Storms moved in from the west and northwest yesterday afternoon, after a morning of warm and dry conditions. Thunderstorms developed and persisted into the evening. Fire behavior remained consistent with recent days. Heavy fuels continue to retain heat, while smaller fuels show reduced movement.

Division A located on the northeast side of the fire has established handline from High Bridge Gulch to Hobo Gulch. Crews will secure and mop up remaining heat along the line today. A Multi-Mission Aircraft flight detected minimal heat near the fireline, and fire activity along Highway 149 remains low. Crews will continue strengthening the fireline today by widening sections where needed and extinguishing remaining hotspots to ensure the line is secure.

On the southeast side of the fire in Division G, handline has been saw-cut and the dozer line fully tied in. Crews have identified areas to extend handline toward the Crystal Lake and Larson Lake trail systems and are preparing to place new indirect line on the southeast side of the fire. Today crews will continue to remove vegetation along the fireline edge and extinguish remaining pockets of heat.

Weather and Fire Behavior: A high-pressure system is over the fire area, keeping surface conditions dry through the morning. Later in the day, storms are expected to develop in the south and move northward. While the greatest rain potential lies on the southern side of the fire, significant rainfall is unlikely. Afternoon storms have the potential to bring localized outflow winds.
