Lamoni Welcomes Chief Barney
(Pictured: New Lamoni Police Chief John Barney at a rare moment at his desk responding to a caller.)
The smooth transition of police chiefs from Bob Bell to welcoming new chief, John Barney, occurred April 15th. For Barney, who grew up in Lamoni and graduated from Lamoni Community Schools in 2004, it was a welcome home. “Growing up in Lamoni, I had a fondness for the community,” Barney said. “And my family and church are here.”
"Having a police chief who not only grew up in the community but who has also served many years as a policeman in a university city, dealing with both locals residents and university students, is a tremendous asset to Lamoni,” Mayor Douglas Foster said. “His familiarity with the town and many individual residents, his experience dealing with a large student population, and his extensive work in community policing makes him uniquely prepared for the duties of chief of police."
After graduating from high school, Barney’s first stop was in Ames where he received a Bachelor of Science in History. It was also where he received his first experience on a police force. As a student, he worked on the university’s police department as a Community Service Officer and eventually became a Community Service Officer Coordinator. As a Community Service Officer, his initial involvement with police operations included activities like patrol, booking prisoners, finger printing, safety escorts, and special event security.
Apparently, he liked his duties because his first position after graduating in December 2008 was as a Police Officer with the Creston Police Department for a year. He joined Ames’ Police Department next where he worked in various capacities until becoming Lamoni’s Chief of Police. “What I learned at working at three different agencies is that they are all remarkedly similar,” Barney said. “In each, day to day calls include accidents, minor criminal activities, traffic violations, and occasional major crimes.”
In addition to his role as a police officer with Ames, Barney also worked as a Safe Neighborhood Team member which encompassed community outreach, surveillance, hot spot enforcement, party response, and liquor law enforcement. He was also a member of the Ames’ Police Department Emergency Response Team which he explains would be like a SWAT team. As a member of this team, he performed tactical warrant service, surveillance, target area and threat assessment, responding to critical incidents, and crime scene searching. During his tenure at Ames, Barney received the Governor’s Safety Bureau Traffic Safety Award for his activities as a patrol officer. He also was presented with the Ames Police Department Life Saving Award and City of Ames Humanitarian Award for rescuing a driver from an overturned and submerging car in a creek.
As a working police officer, Barney looks forward to being an effective team member. He plans on working towards being receptive and responsive to the needs of the department and community. Using his experience to update administrative areas of the department and streamlining procedures, he ultimately looks forward to updating equipment and vehicles and making sure everything in the department is uniform. “I feel confident as a day to day police officer, and I’m looking forward to developing the administrative skills required in the chief’s role.”
“John has hit the ground running and meshes very well with not only his officers, but the entire City staff. It’s great to have him back in the community,” Lamoni City Administrator Barb Stuck said.”
